My thing is, Singer's movies have had diminishing returns every time, with the same quirks and hang-ups he has as a director within this genre. Things that become increasingly more glaring and I become less willing to forgive with each movie, because of said diminishing returns in terms of quality.
The X-Men franchise under Singer has always felt like the underachiever of the class. X-Men is one of the most popular franchises in the comic world, alongside Spider-man it was for the longest time Marvel's top tier to combat the likes of Batman in terms of popularity and general public awareness. There is no reason to squander that.
But every X-Men movie under Singer, save X3 which was completely dire and doesn't count obviously, felt like that underachiever in school. You know if they applied themselves, they could be that A+ student. They could produce films on par with the likes of the Dark Knight or the Avengers, two very different styles of superhero movies but both pretty much at the pinnacle of their respected genre. They could be so much more. And, there is constant glimpses of it that give you hope, maybe this time will be different, maybe this time they'll realize that potential.
And, then you get things like X3.
First Class was the first time in the over a decade long history of X-Men in movie format that I felt that potential was not only being realized, but was showing growth for even more. That it could, with time and budget & the proper build, finally give X-Men fans the movie they have been long over due for. Not only that, it shattered the chains of the bulky, murky and generally awkward & confusing continuity that Singer wrote himself into a corner with, giving the franchise as a movie series a breath of new life.
Then Singer took it right back and shoved it right back into the hole it managed to crawl out of.
By all accounts, all those characters we met and grew attached to in First Class? Bit players so that Hugh Jackman & the Wolverine character can once again get the spotlight shining on them. Once again the old guard returns and in some cases I don't mind, like Patrick Stewart, but in other cases...yuck, like Halle Berry, who despite being a talented actress has never done anything good with her role in X-Men.
Because of getting burnt so many times in the past and because we've seen that Bryan Singer's not only wrong by movies like the Marvel Studios films, but is still forcing his obsolete methods onto the movie, I'm skeptical and a little cynical about the DoFP. Especially since it's one of my favorite X-Men storylines of all time.
