A US woman has learned of her husband’s death in a car accident while live-tweeting about the accident.
Caran Johnson’s husband Craig died in a head-on collision in Vancouver, Washington, on December 4.
An avid news watcher, Mrs Johnson is well-known by local media for tweeting about news and traffic incidents.
When she saw The Columbian newspaper tweeting about the accident shortly after it happened she acted no differently.
“This accident sounds horrible,” she tweeted using the Twitter handle @scancouver.
Barely 15 minutes after the newspaper confirmed one person had died in the crash and Mrs Johnson began to worry that her husband had not returned home.
“I’m trying not to panic, but my husband left work early and he drives 205 to get home. He’s not answering his phone,” she tweeted. “And he’s late.”
Moments later she tweeted: “I just called his work and he was feeling faint when he left work #panic.”
Mrs Johnson told her followers that she was worried her husband, who has epilepsy, may have passed out or had a seizure.
“How long do I wait for him to come home before I call the police?” she tweeted.
Less than an hour later she delivered the heartbreaking news: “It’s him. He died.”
In a tragic twist, a fellow Twitter user was at the scene of the crash and saw Mrs Johnson’s tweets.
“@scancouver I was with your husband from the moment the start of the accident until his last breath, he felt no pain and he was at peace,” April Sturdevant tweeted.
Ms Sturdevant said she had spent hours searching for Mrs Johnson and had “words of comfort” for her.
The Columbian’s news team was shaken upon learning about the tragic coincidence.
“Death of @scancouver’s hubby has shaken @thecolumbian. Acquainted by tweets, she’s been our companion on lonely days/nights in newsroom,” reporter Paris Achen tweeted.
The crash is being investigated by authorities.
