Am i the only one who hates it when a show with a continuing storyline DOESN'T do "on the last episode of ______" segment on the beginning of the episode? Most shows do have this, but some shows dont, and to me that's almost punishing someone for missing an episode. I know people can catch up online, but i still think that a recap segment helps new viewers.

TV shows can't even be bothered to do themes longer than 10 seconds anymore. You expect them to take 30-45 more seconds to recap something you should have been watching already?
On the flip side, old radio shows were kinda bad with this. (I'm a fan of classic radio shows.) Superman, Jack Armstrong, Gene Autry. They'd be 15 minute serials every day. The first 5 minutes recapped you from what happened on the previous show, 2-3 minutes of a commercial shilling some new decoder ring or toy from their sponsor, the next 5 is what's actually new, another 2-3 minutes recapping the commercial shill, then a bit of what's gonna happen next time.
(Gene Autry, 30 minutes of the singing cowboy, yeehaw. He sang the theme, did 2 more songs. And out of those 30 minutes, you got 5 minutes of a story. Crap.)

Yeah, I'm always fond of recaps. Not even if I miss an episode, but sometimes something minor that has happened but is going to play a big part in an episode, it's nice to be reminded of it.

On the flip side, recaps get really annoying when you're watching several episodes back to back on Netflix or something. I always skip past the recap in that situation.

Especially when it ruins something that happens in the episode by kind of spoiling it. Lost used to be guilty of this, it would show something from seasons ago on the previously on bit with say for an example a character you haven't seen in a while or a plot device that hasn't been used in a while, then when it shows up in that episode the impact is lessened as by reminding you of it at the start of the episode they spoiled the episode.

In theory they're fine, certainly preferable to the characters explaining the plot to each other but as SandmanBrawl Saturday said there's already too much time eaten by adverts, we've already lost themes, I'd rather the recaps go than even more of the actual show.

I always knew that if they did a recap at the start of Buffy, especially if it recapped several different stories that some serious shit was going down tonight
