Not like it was a tiny ring by any means, but it seemed to have a more "square" shape as opposed to the more rectangular shape most other federations had their matches in.

I'm not sure why specifically but I prefer the ring to be smaller, makes the wrestlers look bigger.

I really hated it. Whenever I'd turn over and watch some WCW it was really distracting the small ring.

It's not that it was small, the wrestlers were just very large.

WCW's ring was 18 sq ft, which I believe is the standard size for wrestling rings. WWE uses a 20 sq ft ring, which is unusually large. So the question shouldn't be why WCW's ring was so small, but why WWE's ring is so big.

I used to love the sound WCW's ring made.

WCW's was a standard 18x18 foot ring. Same as every other company ever really. It's a weird thing where WWE is the exception but also kinda the rule. Like their ring rope that are actually ropes despite being the only company outside of AWA that used them (Post-50-60's I guess).
Plus camera angles, like ROH on HDNet that made the ring look like it was ridiculously small.

Giggle, it was tiny. I bet WCW drove a big car to compensate .

So the question shouldn't be why WCW's ring was so small, but why WWE's ring is so big. Reality: They used boxing rings for a long time and probably just used the same manufacturer to make them out of loyalty. True Answer: Vince compensated for something else with his 21 foot rings. Trivia: Until about 1988-89 they used whatever was available at the time. The Wrestling Classic PPV used an 18ft ring with cable ropes for example. Part of the fun of watching the Hogan unreleased collection was seeing how under produced the WWF was at the time, especially the times when the ropes were blue, red, and white as opposed to the standard (and AMERICANNNNNN!!!!!!) red, white, and blue. I bet someone was fired for that.

For me, the smaller ring made the wrestling seem to happen faster. There was a quicker pace to the matches.
Something else different: the ring ropes appeared to be looser in the WWF/E than in the NWA/WCW.

There were WWF house shows in Toronto in the early days of the national expansion where they used an NWA ring leftover from when the Tunney's had owned that territory. youtu.be/ZiIe9Ord2PU

Honestly I never noticed until I got older and rewatched old matches. I think the smaller ring looks better in contrast to the wrestlers, even the smaller guys looked big in that ring. Also the whole ring was visible on t.v, which I prefer.

Hogan needed that extra step in WWF for the leg drop.

I didn't noticed the sizes of wrestling rings when I was younger.

There are pros and cons to each I feel. The bigger rings help the multi-man matches have space (like the rumble or a batttle Royale), ladder matches don't feel as cramped, and I hated when WCW would try to sell an off the top rope move as OMG he's half way across the ring when it looked like I could make the jump at the age of 12.
WCW rings don't have me worried every time someone tries a spring board off the ropes, matches seemed to move quicker especially for the luchas. Other then that I don't see many pros or cons either way

Some indys, at least the ones I've worked for, use a 16 ft. ring. In something like that, alot of your suplexes and throws have to done corner to corner just to ensure plenty of space.
