My personal opinion is that it comes down to the wrestler not being that great at their position. An old school heel probably never had to resort to anti-gay verbiage in a time when it becomes a media crapstorm against them. I would patently disagree with that. Old-school heels routinely resulted to slurs about race, nationality, creed, culture, religion, and yes, even perceived effeteness of their opponents. In fact, I think the opposite would be true -- many old-school heels would be completely hamstrung by our modern concepts of sensitivity and the graduated scorecard of victimhood.

Old school heels may have done racial slurs but in today's era when everything is very much politically correct it would be foolish to do anything like what Bully did. He was being heckled and probably didn't know how to handle it. He's primarily a tag team guy whose actions talked in the ring. He was face with a situation where, if he doesn't say anything, he's perceived as a poor heel or weak but in his case he said the wrong thing and at the wrong time (not that there should ever be a right time but especially now it's wrong).

They know wrestling is a work, right? Is it heel heat? Yes. Is it tasteless heel heat? Yes. It's not much different than a villain in the movie using a slur. Villains aren't supposed to care about somebody's feelings. They can be racist, sexist, and homophobic. Since it's all entertainment, wrestlers should get the same leeway as actors. There is a difference between Bully Ray saying something and (goes to Wikipedia) Mark LoMonaco saying something. Actors get carte blanche to say or do anything in movies. Wrestlers should more or less get the same leeway at live events. Agreed. The people who made the list are acting like marks who thinks that wrestling is real. Bully Ray and Mark LoMonaco are not the same guy.

Never seen any of his ECW work have you?

The thing that annoys me about homophobia is the way people think it's atoned for with a half-assed apology. "Oh I said it but I'm not really homophobic" If you're not homophobic the idea to say it would never have popped into your head in the first place to say it. Does using "lame" mean you have a hatred for physically handicapped people? Does using "absurd" mean you have a hatred for deaf people? Does using "dumb" mean you have a hatred for mute people? Does using "retarded", "moronic" or "idiotic" (the latter two actually being demonstrably worse insults) mean you have a hatred for mentally handicapped people? To say a pro wrestler can't use a term for the sole purpose of generating a theatric negative reaction is just as sensical as saying that Tumblr feminist superstar Ryan Gosling actually hates women because he tried to strangle Sandra Bullock to death in Murder By Numbers. Saying retarded actually is frowned upon now.

Never seen any of his ECW work have you?[/quote] I didn't watch ECW regularly but mostly remember Joel Gertner doing the talking. When the Dudley's first were heels in WWF I only remember Bubba talking about John Rocker to the MSG Royal Rumble crowd. To be using an anti-gay slur, especially now, screams desperation.
