I take a look at the year that was 1989 in WCW in my latest blog post. Read it hereOddly enough that was my first year of seeing NWA/WCW. Does anyone have any memories of this time besides the Flair/Steambot trilogy?

Terry Funk's theme music in 1989. AWESOME. I thought it was really cool that the SST came out to the Halloween theme as well.

I was totally into NWA in 1989, in fact I think it is what made fall into like with pro wrestling.
I remember Great Muta going over jobbers on tv, especially a match with Scott Hall. Lex Luger turning on Ricky Steamboat after Steamboat lost to Flair. Terry Funks crazy promos on Ric Flair. The Steiners emerging and feuding with Mike Rotunda, Steve Williams, and Kevin Sullivans Varsity Club. The Skycrapers being insanely awesome. Road Warriors getting cuffed in the cage by Dangerously and feuding with the Samoan Swat Team. Jim Cornette helping the Dynamic Dudes who sucked, and then turning on them at Clash of Champions. Sting versus the Iron Sheik in a challenge with those metal batons Sheik carried. Jim Ross announcing. Cactus Jack's first matches, initially as a pseudo jobber against the Steiners then turning on his jobber partner. The dumb 1-900 commercials with Jacko Victory as a CIA agent. Missy Hyatt. I could go on and on.
I have a theory that you always love something most when you first discover it and get into it. NWA 1989 is why Ive been a professional wrestling fan and it will always hold a special place for me.

GAB 89 was my first nwa ppv. Can't tell u how many times i watched that tape. I didn't think Muta could be beaten. I marked like crazy when Double A beat him for the TV title

Music City Showdown (I don't remember the exact name) was one of the few WCW/NWA video tapes my video store had. It was pretty good with a lot of talent and interesting matches. I would have liked to see Junkyard Dog against Great Muta but I guess they had to have Muta win by pinfall and JYD couldn't do the job. Seeing Iron Sheik, mostly a WWF guy, was great too. The 1994 WCW All Nighter seemed to have a number of matches from 1989 and it was nice. WCW was great, a lot of pure wrestling action combined with a few gimmicks but I think they were hurt by never having the publicity that WWF had. Even with Bischoff in charge in the mid 1990s, they still suffered. There was no WCW Magazine from mid 1994 to early 1995, very few merchandise catalogs EVER and very few WCW video either for sale or for rental.

This was the period of time that I got into wrestling, and it was all due to Flair vs Steamboat.

I used to watch wrestling for the over-the-top cartoonish characters and storylines, and not really pay much attention to the matches themselves. Then someone showed me a compilation of the Flair/Steamboat and Flair/Funk matches from '89 and '90 and it changed everything for me.

The setup from Flair/Steamboat into Flair/Funk was genius.

Hell, the 80's NWA was awesome period.
1989 was really great though. As someone said, I just loved the transition from Flair vs Steamboat to Flair vs Funk.

The year 1989 was fantastic for NWA action. A golden year indeed.
