...it is depressing seeing just how f***ing over Ryback was in January. In the ring with Cena, Orton, Sheamus, Jericho and Ziggler and getting genuinely comparable crowd reactions to the rest, and in fact monster pops when he eliminates most of them.
I mean it was a pretty hot crowd anyway, but Ryback used to be so over. He's been so dead in the water for so long now that I'd actually revised in my own memories how over he used to be, despite being quite a fan of the big lug.

It's really insane to think back and realise that I genuinely believed that Ryback could potentially eliminate Cena from the Rumble. I was even slightly confused when Cena just dumped Ryback out and commentary didn't make a big deal out of it.

Backat the end of 2012 I honestly thought Ryback was the WWE's next big star, I think he was a victim of getting lost in the pre mania shuffle that goes on and losing his momentum.
His fued with Henry was horrible.

Back when he was feuding with Punk for the WWE title, my head knew that Punk was going over but my heart wanted Ryback to win the title, even for a month.
It seems over the past few years anytime someone has come close to matching Cena in terms of overness, internal or external factors have stopped them from doing so. Jeff Hardy was insanely over in 2009, but he got released and later arrested for drug charges. CM Punk got over by himself in 2011, but had to be reeled in by Triple H and the awfully convoluted authority storyline before he could dare get booked too strongly. Then of course we had Ryback get over with the crowds by going on a long undefeated streak and a crowd pleasing move-set with a great superstar look, which of course had to be squashed by making him lose every major match he was in for months on end.

I'm assuming most of the newz we've heard about Ryback's heat backstage is actually true.
It's the only real explanation that makes sense for what we've seen with him on TV.

The reactions Ryback was getting was what started to make me a fan of his. Sort of took me back to growing up watching Goldberg. He has a very similar build and move set, which I was all right with. I'll never understand why they turned him heel. They had another perfect opportunity to turn Cena heel against Ryback or just have Ryback be the cool face/tweener and not actually go full heel. He could've even won the Rumble and faced Big Show at Mania for the World Heavyweight Championship, then had a nice long run with that belt to build him up even more. Instead his leg was kicked out of his leg and now he's teaming with Axel.

He was so f***ing badass in his feud with the Shield. The huge FEED ME MORE chants, the music hits, the place goes APESHIT and he just wrecks the place. But he never EVER got one over on them, and then had to be the "odds for Cena to overcome" which wrecked him. Couldnt win as a face, couldnt win as a heel.

They really killed Ryback by having him in title matches before they wanted him to be the champion. He lost to Punk twice, the Shield a couple of times, Henry, Cena a couple of times, and then Punk again. They got him hot as hell and then had to job him out because of their own booking. I love Mark Henry, but there's no way he should be beating Ryback at WrestleMania 29. He shouldn't have gotten the heel turn feud with Cena unless they were going to have him get the title, which wouldn't make sense after Cena had just won it off of Rock. And the second Punk feud..... just horrendous. They couldn't even let him get over on Punk ONCE. Rybully could have worked, but losing to Miz via leg kicks and getting ran over by the unbeatable CM Punk again made him a joke.
Honestly, it feels like it'd take a lot of work to get him back to where he was, which is a shame because WWE nearly had a new star on their hands.

Ryback definitely should have held some form of gold by now, whether it was the IC Title or a brief WHC sting before it was unified/retired. I don't really feel like there's anywhere for him now.

I think they killed his heat and didn't let him get it back at Mania like they did (a lesser extent of course) with Ryder. Guys get thrown into a feud where they are made to look like the dope or just lose horribly (Ryback with the Shield, Ryder with Kane) and of course instead of putting them into a Mania that they didn't need and still made them lose. They should have had Ryback fight the Shield in a gauntlet at Mania. Put over the Shield's team work but put over Ryback with the ability to get each of them individually

I'm going to be the voice of dissent and say Ryback suffers from the same problem as perennial internet whipping boy Del Rio: he is stale.
Think about this, Del Rio came in HUGE, and people loved him. He made Mysterio tap, won clean (something heels back then almost never did, and still hardly ever do), had a cool entrance, and seemed like a legit main event star from his first appearance. Then he proceeded to do the same exact things again.... and again.... and again..... and again. To the point that I don't think there's a single person out there that would say ADR is his or her favorite wrestler.
Ryback was the same way. Comes out strong with entertaining squash matches. Not a good talker but doesn't need to be. Cool chants. And people were HOT to see him beat Punk and the Shield after getting screwed over. But then he proceeded to wrestle the SAME match over and over again. And say the same thing. I think they turned him heel to try and salvage him before he completely wore out his welcome, but that flopped for the same reason.
I think he has potential for sure, but I also think people wear the rose-colored glasses WAY too much with the guy. A decent talent for sure, but not some be-all, end-all face of the WWE (at least right now).

It really seemed like Ryback was just one match away from winning the IC title back when he was blowing up and it looked like they were working towards that but then Cena got injured and someone tied his shoe-laces to a rocket whilst he wasn't looking. It's amazing to think that being the 2nd top face in the company in terms of credibility could lead to damaging someone's career so heavily.
