I just went to see it today, and I personally thought it was wonderful. Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson did well in their respective roles, and there were enough comical moments here and there to keep it from being depressing on the whole (seriously, after the movie gets to California, the flashback scenes are pretty sad).
What do you guys think of the movie?

Saw it yesterday, it was a really well done movie. Pretty depressing at times though. I will say that if I were on the writing team that had to deal with that lady I would have walked out. Holy shit was she a pain in the ass.

Do Schwartzman and Novak (who play the Sherman Brothers) portray brothers who get along with each other?
Because that right there is a sign as to whether or not this movie is really realistic.....

Saw it on Christmas Eve. It was quite a good movie. Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson were great, but I also really liked the performances for the Sherman Brothers and Don DiGardi. Paul Giamatti's character was alright, although too much of the 'happy-go-lucky' type to me Only gripes I had were the flashback scenes. They were fine, but there were a few that felt slotted in. I would've been pleased if they cut 1 or 2 of them Having said that, it was an alright movie. Being a Disney movie, there were moments of revisionist history to make Walt Disney more mythological, but I liked the amount of historical accuracy they put into the movie {Spoiler}Spoiler - Walt Disney taking PL Travers to Disneyland? Never happened - Walt Disney flying to London to personally meet PL Travers? Never happened either - PL Travers going to the Disney Studios for permission to go to the premiere? She wasn't invited and did ask via telegram, but didn't fly to Hollywood and personally ask
Those were the biggest inaccuracies, but the rest seems valid enough. She did ask not to have any red in the movie (More to irritate them though), no animation, no modern soundtrack (She wanted turn-of-the-century music like "Greensleeves"), complained that Mr. Banks was too cruel, Mary Poppins was too sing-songy, she didn't like the tape measure used, and she checked every minute to make sure the tape was running I can agree with the criticisms though. Harlan Ellison's recent comments on the movie certainly has valid points, although with non of the personal vitriol that he trademarked Language warning obviously Do Schwartzman and Novak (who play the Sherman Brothers) portray brothers who get along with each other? Because that right there is a sign as to whether or not this movie is really realistic..... Yes they do

Just watched this movie. I knew there was "Disney revisionism" at work, but boy howdy did they make some monumental changes to reality. Like Ellison says in that video, the hand of Disney seemed to rise up and do some work on this one. {Spoiler}The main dramatic crux of the film never happened. Disney never tried to woo the rights out of her - she signed them over (after many years of objecting, sure) and was then moreorless legally maneuvered out of actually having final say on the script. AND HE WAS NEVER EVEN IN CALIFORNIA WHEN SHE WAS THERE. Their dialogue in this movie is based on correspondences they had with each other over letters and telegrams. Suddenly my previous comment months back about the Sherman Brothers getting along seems like nothing compared to what else happened in the film. This movie is a spin doctor's delight. Emma Thompson is great, at least (as an woman who, as her grandkids said when she died, "never loved anyone and no one loved her.") Tom Hanks' Walt, though, is Tom Hanks looking kinda like Disney. Very distracting most of the times; although he's a good actor which means that, when he needs to woo you with his performance, it works.

I was shocked Tom Hanks didn't get any nominations for his great performance of Walt Disney.

I was shocked Tom Hanks didn't get any nominations for his great performance of Walt Disney. I thought he did... Or was that for Captain Philips?

Anyone who cries revisionism..
No shit.
It's a movie..all movies take liberties with their source material, whether it's true or not. Hell, the f***ing movie is about that!!
I know Disney wasn't the greatest person ever. Hell, how do you think he got as far as he did? He stepped on people along the way. Want to know what kind of a person Walt was? Well guess what, there's plenty of info from all over that you should take over this movie. Besides, do you think a company bearing HIS NAME is going to shed a bad light on him? That is retarded. Also, I thought they did enough to give a general sense of things, which is fine in most "true" movies.
It was a good movie, maybe not 100% to it's source...but hey, neither was Mary Poppins, and that movie is timeless.

Honestly, it's sort of amazing that there was so little creative interference from Disney. The only thing they had changed was Disney's smoking, and they just didn't want to show him in the act of puffing. The screen writers said that the movie they put out was otherwise the same as they envisioned it.

He was good in this but Captain Phillips might have been his best performance ever, yet he never even got nominated. As for Saving Mr. Banks, I enjoyed it and don't care one bit about the revisionism in it.

I liked the movie as well, and I could handle all the revisionism except one small scene. When Travers arrives to her hotel, she sees a bunch of stuffed toys cluttering up the room, compliments of Disney. She finds a Winnie-the-Pooh doll and mutters something about Disney having got to A.A. Milne. Mary Poppins came out in 1964, with the preliminary work being done a few years prior, the first Winnie-the-Pooh featurette came out in 1966. They purposefully ignored the historical inaccuracy for that stupid joke. I don't know why that bothered me more than the other stuff, but it did.
