Flamethrowers and pitchforks galore. Mainstream fans would have non-reacted to his push and IWC fans would have complained endlessly. Heck, even despite his shoddy treatment after Eddie's death I sense a lot of people never really liked Chavo's work much anyway. Rey was definitely ready (brother) at the time for a main event push and Eddie's unfortunate death only propelled it. If anything, Rey would have had a way more solid main event run had Eddie lived.

No f***s would be given by the fans because Chavo wasn't over before and after Eddy died in WWE. Rey was very popular before he got his megapush to the World title. Chavo, on the other hand was greeted with apathy.

The nepotism would've been blatant
Unlike Chavo, Rey actually got over on his own merits.

Then the defunct European title would have had more credibility than the World Title.

The only interesting character Chavo Guerrero ever had was cut short by Eddie's passing.

I do recall people at the time being ticked that Rey won while Chavo was so pathetically dispatched with a 30-second stay in the same match. Not sure if that means they'd have loved Chavo winning, but Chavo was certainly seen as the more IWC friendly winner of the two.

While Chavo was always a solid worker, he was NEVER over enough to be anything more than a mid card act at best. That call would have been universally jeered.
The only way I could see Chavo getting even a cup of coffee in a main event program is if his feud with Rey happened during Rey's title run which would have actually been better than Rey jobbing to every big man on the roster.

Chavo's theme opening smackdown would be pretty hilarious.

Rey was the way better choice. Plus, it lead to a pretty good feud with a heel Chavo.
HOWEVER, I think WWE should have gone all-in with Edge as a heel WWE Champion and kept him the champion until Mania. Then you have Cena win the Rumble, setting up Edge v. Cena for WrestleMania. Edge made the best of working with Foley, but I think WWE should have gone with him as WWE Champion after the awesome angle at New Year's Revolution. We all saw what great chemistry Edge and Cena had, but WWE didn't go all the way with it until later that year.

It'd be a greater threat to WWE's bottom-line that 10,000 Ted Turners.

Wouldn't have done much good for anyone, I think. Mysterio was turned into a star because of it, Chavo's reign would have been seen much like Swagger or Ziggler's runs with a world title in retrospect. Even at the most he ever got as the evil prick who tormented Rey, he still didn't do anything for me, so can't say I'm too upset by the outcome. Just wish Rey hadn't leaned so much on Eddie when it all happened.

Reaction in Mexico and the Latino demographics would have been so strong, WWE would have relocated their base of operations from Stamford to Mexico City, bought out AAA and CMLL, and triggered a new Golden Age in professional wrestling.

I doubt they would care as much you think. Latinos don't just cheer for fellow Latinos just cause. If Chavo was a draw to them, AAA and CMLL would be booking him right now. TNA would still have him as an employee because they been forever trying to find the Latino messiah that will bring them that demograpic.
