Talking of Abaranger and Dinosaur sentai, here's the All-dino group henshin & roll-call from The Kyoryuger vs Go-Busters movie: Fun fact: Geki's Dino Buckler is actually a modified MMPR Legacy Morpher. Geki Henshin is pretty cool...it remind me of Adam morph from Overdrive.

Haim Saban had to change his pants after seeing that....because he was so excited that he jumped up and spilled his drink on them. (What? You thought I was going there? Get your mind out of the gutter ya pervs. )

This is probably a stupid question, but is there a reason they've never marketed the super sentai series in the USA? I feel like DVDs/blurays would sell well, especially with all the people who grew up on MMPR being of an age to throw money around. I know I'd buy them all.

I think it had to do with money issue with the actor union or the higher up thinking it wont sell well in the usa. I know at one time Marvel, when it had a deal with Toei, try to being Super Sentai over in the 80s but couldn't find anyone willing to broadcast it. starlogged.blogspot.com/2012/07/1983-marvel-in-japan-comics-interview-3.html

I think it had to do with money issue with the actor union or the higher up thinking it wont sell well in the usa. I know at one time Marvel, when it had a deal with Toei, try to being Super Sentai over in the 80s but couldn't find anyone willing to broadcast it. You're on the right track. As I understand it, acting agency fees etc are ludicrously high in Japan to bring a show like Super Sentai overseas. There were a few markets that had it pre-Zyuranger/MMPR like the Philippines, but once Power Rangers started, they imported that instead, because it was cheaper. Obviously Toei signs off on anything Power Rangers-related and they make money from it as much as Saban does, I think in Toei's financial reports etc, it's all banded together under "Power Rangers" The exception is Korea, which still gets dubbed Sentai. Amusingly it's still retitled "Power Rangers". For example, Gokiager became "Power Rangers Captain Force" And yes, Stan Lee (who also liked the Spider-Man series Toei did, and of course Marvel being credited on Battle Fever J) apparently tried to pitch Super Sentai to various people, widely believed to be a dub of Sun Vulcan, but ultimately it went nowhere. Haim Saban tried more than once to get this idea off the ground, too. First a version of Bioman, then years later, "Phantoms" was in development as an adpatation of Jetman, which was dropped in favour of Zyuranger and the rest is history. EDIT: Just remembered next week is the Kamen Rider Gaim/ToQger crossover! Can't wait for that!

So, anyone watch the ToQger/Gaim special yet? I'm really into Kamen Rider Gaim right now, so the prospect of the main story being put on hold for this wasn't exactly exciting me, even though I'm liking ToQger as well. That said, with how the last proper episode of Gaim left things (Kouta finding out Yuuya's fate, blasting Yggdrassil's WMD tower thing to bits with his shiny new "Kachidoki Arms" form, and the reveal of the "Overlord" Invesses), this actually made for a nice breather from the drama, betrayals, and doom. There was a nice teaser of the Showa vs Heisei Rider movie as well, with {Spoiler}{Spoiler}Fifteen appearing, and Ichigo, Nigo and V3 (the first three Showa-era Kamen Riders) appearing to fight him.
It was also cool to see {Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}Narutaki pop up, even if he didn't say "ONORE DIKEIDO!:

Finished off watching Boukenger a little while ago.
A very good series overall. The characters were likable, the high adventure/exploration theme lent it self well in providing varied back drops and set pieces (No "Oh look the monster of the week is attacking Tokyo FOR THE HUNDREDTH TIME!") The mecha despite being based on heavy machines looked surprising sleek and the series was unique in that it had a rotating cast of villains.
My only real nit picks was that the 30th anniversary special could have been bigger with more teams involved (Easily forgivable given that feature length movies were not the norm in 2006) and that they went with IMO the least interesting antagonist (Arch Priest Gaja) as the final foe.)
Now I've moved on to one the most well regraded Sentai's of the previous decade: "Samurai Sentai Shinkenger" (Appare!)

I know I may be a little behind, but what is the deal with the New Silver Ranger in Super Megaforce I think the Silver Ranger is awesome and all but isn't he usually someone the characters know

I've been watching some more of Zyuranger, and I can't stop laughing about how bad the effect of Great Satan's head blowing up was. It's no surprise MMPR didn't use that.

Yesterday I finished Zero: Black Blood, the 6-episode/2-movie Garo spin-off revolving around mah boi Rei Suzumura, the silver Makai Knight himself.
I enjoyed it, and have yet to watch anything Garo-related I've disliked, but I couldn't help thinking that this story did not need six 25-minute episodes to tell this one story. An hour would have been ideal, like Tougen No Fue (an hour long story revolving around Jabi and Rekka, two female Makai priests), or even a Red Requiem-style single movie (Black Blood was released theatrically as two movies). If they had to do six episodes, then at least a couple could have been just one-shots with Zero battling horrors in his area, kinda like his solo episodes in Garo: Makai Senki.
I don't want this to feel like I'm down on it, but that was my feeling. When it got going, it was classic Garo stuff, and didn't feel like lesser stakes because it wasn't Kouga or Yami Wo Terasu Mono's Ryuga in the spotlight (something Tougen No Fue also pulled off really well.
Ring, the big bad of Black Blood, was an interesting villain - a Horror who was building a weird Utopia where humans & Horrors co-exist. Which sounds great, apart from the fact that 1 in 50 humans that live there are picked to be "meals" for the Horrors. Obviously this "compromise" doesn't sit well with someone who is a sworn guardian of humanity. Especially the whole way in which they are made "Dolce" before they are eaten.
As for the new characters that aid Zero, Cain was OK, as far as Makai priests go, but didn't make an impression like say, Leo did.
I liked the twist with Yuna being able to use her father's sword, which flies in the face of the Garoverse's "women can't be knights or use their weapons" thing. I didn't like how she was able to do it (The bone of her dead father implanted in her arm)
Loved the fact that Zero got more elaborate "henshins" whenever he summoned his armor. I hope this is something that carries over into the main shows.
Some well-done fights and action scenes too, and crucially, PRACTICAL SUITS. The "Zero" armor was mostly the physical suit rather than CGI, and the "mook" horrors were the classic suit as well. The only obviously CGI part was the appearance of Ginga (Zero's horse, but horse scenes are always CGI) in the final showdown with Ring. This being a spin-off, one would expect all-CGI "suits" and more out-of-suit fighting, but it was about the same balance as the first two seasons of Garo.
All in all, not quite as awesome as it could have been, but a great appetiser for Makai No Hana, the fourth season proper of Garo, which kicked off on Friday. Still waiting for the subtitles for that. Crucially with Makai No Hana, it appears Keita Amemiya's back on board. Which is good, because it was his baby to begin with, and I feel like his touch is what was lacking last year, and with Black Blood. In synopses and stuff I've read, it appears more connected to those early seasons both in story and style (it is Kouga's son, after all, but also references to Messiah, a big part of Garo lore).

I'm gonna talk about Garo yet again.
Makai No Hana has been superb so far. Again, great to see the Golden Knight in a real suit this time out that looks gorgeous and shiny, and looks pretty cool with blue eyes (previous onscreen Garos have had Green, Red and Orange eyes, different eye colour depending on who hold the armor). The episodes have been pretty self-contained with only a hint of the overarching plot (Raiga and Mayuri must defeat the nine horrors used to stop the Eiris, the titular Makai Flower blooming), and a second knight in the form of Crow, who we know little about (he hasn't even transformed yet, but he's only appeared once).
I've just watched episode 4 and I think this was the most fun episode of Garo, ever. Makai Knight vs Zombies, anyone??
One big homage to horror movies and poking fun at them and people who watch them (The horror in this episode being a cinema projectionist who REALLY loves horror movies. The ones that stuck out were the zombie homages - Night of the Living Dead (complete with cameo from Garo creator Keita Amemiya himself as a zombie), and 28 Days Later (including poking fun at the distinction between "Zombies" and "infected"), then moving into Slasher flicks and even a bit of Silence of the Lambs for good measure.
Really cool design on the Horror himself, too. This is another reason why I prefer Garo when it's mostly practical. Because you don't get freaky designs like this in Toku usually. Sometimes Toei throws up something cool in Sentai, but I love the style of Garo, which is very Keita Amemiya.
All in all, Makai No Hana is off to a strong start.
Talking of Amemiya, last week I watched his two 90's Kamen Rider movies, ZO and J. J was odd seeing Tyrannoranger himself, Yamato Tribe Prince Geki as a Rider (the actor was also in Jetman, I'm told. I might make that my next Sentai marathon) as a Kamen Rider. Also, I appreciated the use of stop-motion in these films. They're pretty cool if you want a self-contained 50-minute blast of Rider.

Anyone still watching ToQger?
The debut of Zed, the Emperor of Darkness has given this show a little something, and his debut episode added more fuel to the "Right is in a Coma" theory when he ask the ToQgers if they "have been swallowed by darkness before". I'm thinking darkness either = childhood death or coma.
I'm also gonna put this out there - Zed will somehow end up as a ToQger himself, namely ToQ0 - I've noticed in the cockpits of the support trains there's all the numbers of the ToQgers. 1 to 5 as well as the soon to be debuting 6, plus "TOQ 0" on the panel. So I'm thinking Zed later becomes ToQ0 and is violet by default, and ultimately turn face by the end of the series.
Also Wagon is creepy. More so than the Conductor and his puppet, Ticket. Selfie-taking robot, anyone?

For anyone interested last week TV-Nihon released a subtitle version of Kyoryuger vs Go-Busters. Quick thoughts: As usual the action and fight scenes were pretty good and it was fun to see the return of Enter and Escape two of my favorite Sentai villains ever and the post credits segment featuring the ToQger's was hilarious.
The only real negatives was them trying to jam way to much too plot in a short amount of time, so a lot of story elements amongst the four different teams were rushed if the film was about 20-30 minuets longer it might have been better.
That and the missing members from the Zyurangers and Abarangers. They couldn't have got Abarablack from his home dimension to help out? And yeah I know Burai and Abarakiller are both dead, but that never stopped them before from temporally coming back to save the world. (I guess they couldn't beat God in a poker game in order to get back, that's what happens when Yukki Guy teaches a deity how to properly play cards.)
But all in all it was another good effort from the Super Sentai series.

Selfie-taking robot, anyone? I wasn't far off the mark with this. There's a rumour doing the rounds about a ToQ #0, and he will be played by Masahiro Kuranuki, who played Shion/TimeGreen in Mirai Sentai Timeranger, and more recently Shiguto in Garo. I love Akira/ToQ#6 though. He's like a parody of the atoner/badass lonewolf type 6th ranger. An episode never seems to go by without him wanting to make some kind of heroic sacrifice... and failing. For me, largely the bright spot in what is frankly, a pretty generic Sentai series. It's also suffering because it airs alongside Kamen Rider Gaim, which has been tremendous. This is defintely one to watch in one go if you're not following it currently. Just skip the ones where some douche at Toei decodes to derail everything to flog a movie. The Kikaider crossover episode wasn't terrible, but it was right in the middle of a really big development. Then the random soccer episode the other week was just as irritating.
