I think that in the Mushroom Kingdon, Plumbers are just a term for people who travel by pipe. I don't think he actually unplugs toilets.

In almost 30 years of games not once has that bastard fixed a toilet. He must live large in the Mushroom Kingdom because we damn sure don't accept those coins in the real world. |

But here's the thing. Mario mushrooms are based on aminita muscaria shrooms. These are legal in the US and cause more of an alcohol-ish feeling than the more popular and illegal psilocybin mushrooms.
No, I've never ate either. Yes, I would.

You enter a really strange, colorful world, grow bigger when consuming more shrooms (I KNOW, NERDS), encounter strange creatures, inanimate objects come to life, continue to come across a giant turtle dragon you can't seem to kill, and a princess you never truly save. Like a dream. |

Shigeru Miyamoto has said that he thinks of Mario, Bowser, etc, as almost being like actors, and that, like Popeye and Bluto going through any number of jobs, etc, that they can just pick up any role needed for them for a game, and that is why Mario can throw Bowser into lava, and then just go kart racing with him in another game.
