America didn't. So in order to achieve enough ratings to maintain their ability to be a cable network, they changed their style up. If you watched when it was 'just music' it wouldn't have happened.

Its funny, in this day and age of YouTube, it makes sense to not have a whole channel based on playing music videos; its just that MTV was ahead of the curve by starting to phase them out as early as the late 90s when people still wanted to see them on TV.
Having read the book "I Want My MTV" I think the real problem wasn't so much non-music video programming; just that such shows ended up being complete crap around the turn of the millennium and beyond and that even the lip service being paid to music disappeared as well.

....do they only have one MTV in the US? They have a bunch of MTV's in the UK. MTV Hits, MTV Base, MTV Classic, MTV Dance, MTV Rocks....so it's not really a big deal that the main channel doesn't air music anymore.

I can remember staying by the TV all night, just waiting for your favorite videos to air. Sometimes you'd get lucky & see it a couple times, others you'd wait & wait, for nothing. That sucked.
I don't remember when MTV stopped playing music videos all together, but I can remember the last time it was relevant to me. That would be when The Real Slim Shady video first came out. Pretty sure I saw it's debut too. After that I don't remember seeing anything else. It was probably a combination of them phasing videos out, me having better things to do, & the music industry being stuck on Britney Spears, NSync etc.

I don't know about Classic, Dance and Rocks, but I do know we get Hits here (for Comcast, anyway). I'll put that on once in a while, but if I want music I'd much rather put it into YouTube and have it back to me in 2 seconds then wait hours for what I want to hear on a TV station.

They have MTVU which plays more alternative videos all day non stop (indie, rap, electronic etc), It's basically MTV Base, Dance and Rocks combined in to one channel, I suppose it's similar to what MTV2 was like over here at one point. and Then MTV hits which is like ours which plays pop videos all day non stop And they also have MTV jams which is like MTV base The main 2 MTV channels show themed video blocks between like 3 and 6 am. Not to mention VH1 Soul which plays R&B, Soul, older hip hop etc. Then there is VH1 Classic which seems to be all programming about Hard Rock and metal MTV shows much more music nowadays than it ever did. It's just spread out over multiple channels.

I also heard a rumor that TLC used to be The Learning Channel and showed educational programs.

Not to be a dick but I just preferred MTV when they played music. I'm 8 years older than you and at no point in my living memory has MTV 'only' played music in our country.

At least the History Channel hasn't gone that way. As long as I can still watch historical programming like Ice Road Truckers, I'm good.

Doesn't MTV play music videos during the late night/early morning hours?

I don't even care if MTV started playing videos again, they would hardly play anything worthwhile. MTV2 in the early 2000s was one of my favorite channels. It was a time-and-place thing, but I still think it was cool that they tried to at least cater to people who still liked harder music videos on that channel.
I can remember staying up late with my friend in the later 90s just to see what kind of weird stuff they'd play at night on MTV. There was a lot of crap we MST2K'd, and then there was this brand new video that had yet to get real airplay. It was called "The Bad Touch" by The Bloodhound Gang. You may have heard of it. We, being 13-year-old boys or so, absolutely lost it. And back then, there were hardly any videos online that you could watch. And the ones that were up were so compressed and tiny that it wasn't really worth the still-long wait on dial-up. We had to keep wading through all these crappy videos to find this weird video by this crazy band we never heard of. Shortly after, they made it on TRL, and you could see it every day. Their video for "Mope" never quite caught on, but when we randomly found that video late at night, we lost it all over again at the Pac-Man bit. Good times.

Blame YouTube and music videos being distributed online in general. There's no real profitable incentive for people to turn to MTV for videos anymore when they can just use their laptop or phone to see any video by whatever artist they want, as opposed to sitting through a block just on the odd chance something they might like comes on.

I definitely remember when VH-1 played music. Aaaah, the days of getting ready for school while watching CardioVideo!
And not being able to sleep because this scared the shit out of me.
Yep, VH-1 was a nice counterpart to MTV. Then "celebreality" entered the lexicon and the channel became unwatchable.

I am 13 years older than you and I do remember a time when MTV aired only music. The format worked for well over a decade before they felt the need to change.

I accepted it a long time ago. I wouldn't watch it today if they did play videos because I don't care for any contemporary artists outside of a couple here and there. Meh
