PW Insider:
A smart move on WWE's part, but kind of a bummer for the fans who liked checking out alternative events before the "big game."

They've done this (or at least tried) going back to 26 in Arizona I believe. Not a bad idea but sucks for the indies that love to piggyback off Mania.

What's the point of this?
Was there someone in town that was attending these, but with them not existing, will now pay for an expensive wrestlemania ticket?
It's wrestlemania. If you're there, want to go and have the money, you'll go.
Just because "TNA: We're in the background" or "Ring of Honor: chain wrestling edition" are running in town isn't going to affect it one way or another

So what does the Santa Clara market consist of? San Francisco, Oakland?

That's an antitrust lawsuit waiting to happen.

Can't they just go to San Francisco, Oakland, San Jose, Fremont, San Mateo, Santa Cruz, Berkeley, or Union City?
Santa Clara isn't the only city in central California.

Yeah this is a slap in the face of the fans to be honest, WM weekend is like a wrestling festival in a way with 'Mania being the headline act. The people who are in the area and can afford to go and see the headline act will go regardless of who else is running in the area, it's not as if this is going to draw them any extra fans in by blocking the 'support acts' from playing.
After the mess last night and a lackluster Wrestlemania 30 on the horizon (no I'm not a D-Bry or nothing guy) I can see this pissing off a lot of additional people and maybe even driving people away. The big f*** you to fans of other wrestling than the WWE brand is not a smart thing for WWE to do.

Aren't there monopoly laws to stop this sort of thing?
And how is this a smart move from WWE? Do they really think a show in a gym is going to affect their Wrestlemania sales?

So what does the Santa Clara market consist of? San Francisco, Oakland? i too would like a definition of what the "Santa Clara market" is. there are a number of cities within reasonable driving distance of the city of Santa Clara, so whats to stop other promotions from running in one of them? What's the point of this? Was there someone in town that was attending these, but with them not existing, will now pay for an expensive wrestlemania ticket? It's wrestlemania. Aren't there monopoly laws to stop this sort of thing? Good question, I kind of wondered that myself. I hate that instead of allowing competition, they tend to try to crush it.

But I consider that minor loss a good cost of doing business so people that like wrestling continue enjoying wrestling imo. Those shows aren't a threat to the WWE, they're the kind of thing that keep people into wrestling. Stopping people from having an indy show to go to is very likely to cause a minor overall hit to their gross profit, even considering blah blah guy that went and bought a CM Punk shirt or whatever. I say WWE makes more money long term by those shows existing and being available, even when they run directly counter to things on mania weekend.

Ugh, I hope they don't start getting like FIFA and the IOC when it comes to stifling competition and attempting to ensure that only a closed cartel make money, only on a smaller evil/corrupt scale.
They've done enough advertising for Subways, maybe within a few years they'll forge closer ties with then and ban any other sellers of food within a mile of the WM stadium.

This is a dick move. WrestleMania makes plenty of money every year. I've been to 2 Manias, and between tickets to WM and other WWE events, travel costs, hotel, food, etc. I've never had money leftover to buy a Cena t-shirt or whatever else WWE is hoping I'll get from them by shutting out the "competition". The people who go to indy shows WM weekend do so because they like WWE alternatives, and/or because those shows are less expensive than yet another WWE ticket, which they've already spent too much on. WWE stopping Joe Blow from running at the local gym isn't going to make those same people magically like WWE more and want to give them even more money.

Of course they'd do this once Wrestlemania came to the west coast again. Really upset, but I hope the national indie promotions can hold their events around San Francisco or somewhere else 30 minutes within Santa Clara
If only Summerslam was a bigger event and we can get all the East Coast promotions out here for a week
