Was wondering what the current state of real time strategy games is today?
I was hoping to play the latest in resource management and army building, but it seems there is a considerable absence of these games, waht happened?
Any recommendations for a RTS that is recent? Had a look at some top ten lists but they all seem to be suggesting games that are 5-7 years old (Age of Empires 2, Really?).
What is the current equivalent of Total Annihilation?
(Not called Starcraft 2)

I think Rome Total War II or whatever its called is the closest thing to what your looking for. Unfortunately, not many good RTS games these days IMO.

What is the current equivalent of Total Annihilation? Planetary Annihilation, it's currently in beta and was a Kickstarter game by Uber Entertainment, they have some of the original guys that worked on TA in their company and they pushed to work on a spiritual sequel. In terms of other RTS games, I've never been a fan of them but I enjoyed Dawn of War 2 and it's expansions greatly and it's a few years old now so it's usually on sale for fairly cheap.

Not exactly recent since it came out in I think 2010 but I really enjoyed Military History Commander: Europe at War. You take control of either the Allies or Axis in WW2 starting from the German invasion of Poland. It plays similar to the civilisation games (just without progressing your civilisation). I completed it a week or so ago and really enjoyed it. Was pretty fun to try different tactics and see how you compared to the actual war. My German campaign successfully invaded Scotland, Wales and Ireland but got completely annihilated when Russia decided to jump in and decimate my unprotected Eastern flank. My allied campaign ground the Germans to a halt in France until late 1941 but my version of the D-Landings (targeting Denmark rather than the well protected France) faltered and needed the Russians to bail me out But yeah, fun game. Just wish there was a bit more depth in it (Like more personalised units for each army rather than just generic Tank, Submarine, Fighter etc). But still, I recommend it.
