I remember him having cringeworthy lines about beating swollen penises and pearl necklaces.

I remember him never having a beat, and taking VERY long pauses in between each "verse".

I remember him never having a beat, and taking VERY long pauses in between each "verse". That's the street battle style that first gained popularity in 2002/2003 circa the Serius Jones / Murda Mook / Jae Millz era.

Yeah, whoever thought a rapping wrestler ever works? Especially a white middle class bodybuilder. I suppose they were trying to ride the Eminem hype wave.

As a white kid who was obsessed with rap and the hip-hop scene around the time (ages 12 to 14), I honestly think John Cena was the guy who got me excited about wrestling again. I mean.... I was wearing throwback jerseys too.... I was wearing headbands outside of athletic competition.... I was listening to rap exclusively. Dude was everything I aspired to be at the time.

I wasn't watching between '02 and mid '06, but I remember turning Smackdown on once in about 2004 and wondering how the f*** a white guy rapping (rapping VERY badly, including at Royal Rumble '03 where he was out of time with his own damn music) got over as a babyface.
A white guy rapping appallingly just seems like an amazing midcard heel gimmick to me, not an upper card babyface.

That video title was one letter away from being really really uncomfortable.

remember how WWE tried making him sound OG from the streets and that's when fans started to hate him?
like gizzarkhenry said, it's a great gimmick for a midcard stooge heel, but a terrible gimmick for your #1 babyface.

Except that he actually was a good rapper and, along with the throwback jerseys, would wear skullies or armbands of legit respected underground rap outfits at the time. Plus, he has sort of a pedigree, his cousin is Esoteric and his "Basic Thuganomics" theme was produced by 7L.

But I enjoyed it and it's funny to look at Cena now vs then when he rhymed with f*** and had the crowd chant it so he didn't get bleeped.

He can rap, but at the time he mostly rapped badly, and he was out of rhythm at the Rumble.

I remember when he appropriated G-Unit's spinning jewellery aesthetic which was all the rage in 2003-2004.
