In Rey's case, he's been doing it since he was a minor, and he doesn't know any other life. I think he comes back out of fear. But he saved his money and he's a big enough name to just do indies for a considerable payday. Hell, why not follow in El Santo's footsteps and do movies. Because it's not a money thing. It's that from the time he was a child, wrestling is the only life Rey has ever known. He likely doesn't know what to do with himself if he's not in the ring. Which isn't to say that he isn't smart (or talented) enough to do something else, just that psychologically (or emotionally), he may not be able to move past it. If to him, being a wrestler is what defines him, it very well could be hard for him to accept not being able to do it anymore.

Emotions be damned, his knees have accepted it and it's time to heed their call. He's more fragile than Nash at this point.
