I know that Triple H beat Kane for the title at No Mercy 2002, but then they kind of just forgot about it for 6 months. Why did they do this? They could've at least had Triple H use the title, maybe losing to a younger guy via help from a face he was feuding with for the world title, but nope. Plus, there were a lot of mid-carders on Raw alone that could've used it. I mean, I guess it's better than WWE's current practice of just forgetting about titles (*cough* US title *cough*), but still. Why did this happen? Go for it in the comments.

The purpose of the match was to unify the titles and have 1 champion on Raw. They unified the Hardcore and European titles with the IC title during that summer, so that was the final step.

The title was pretty banged up from the heavy schedule. When it heard it was going to work with HHH, the IC title told Vince it'd go home.

The real question is why did they decide to use Katie Vick to get the unification over?

I cared more about it when it was deactivated than I do now.

I believe HHH wanted to be the only singles champion on Raw.

Funny thing is, when the Hardcore and European titles got absorb into the IC title, they did not count the person who won the unification match as the last of those champions.
When the IC title was unified with the WHC, Triple H was recognized as the last IC champ. It's little things like that, that make cause so much of the HHHate around here.
Did he really need to be the last recognized IC champ?

Did he really need to be the last recognized IC champ? RVD is considered the last Hardcore and European champion, both unification matches that he won. Personally, I think it's stupid. Being "the last" of something that the company didn't really think is that important doesn't really mean anything. It's just funny how it ALWAYS goes to someone new before they get rid of it, like it's going to give them a rub. It's not like the person beat the title itself, so it's not exactly a retirement rub. It's a f***ing title that you in no way had control over keeping because the company thought it shouldn't be around anymore, why in kayfabe sense should you care about winning it? They won't talk about for very long anyways. This was a rough time for Raw. This furthered my belief that more titles were better, because the midcard was so directionless during this time. Not that things are better now, but I'd say a lot of it has to do with lack of caring from creative. It's too bad things are different now.

I didn't care about the Hardcore or European titles going bye-bye, but getting rid of the IC title was just stupid. I really hope it wasn't "hur dur I have to be the only guy with a shiny" attitude on Burials McGee's part, either. but it wouldn't surprise me if it was. WWE was in a weird place during the early brand-split era, they threw a lot of silly ideas out there that didn't go anywhere and eventually got abandoned, like having the one heavyweight champ work both shows and having no midcard belts, whilst also having tag belts for both shows being separate.

The WWE does not recognize RVD as the last champ. It says Hardy is the last Euro champ www.wwe.com/classics/titlehistory/euro

The story I remember going around was that the plan was to make the IC belt the top belt on RAW and have Triple H hold it when Brock went to SD! But, H felt that the belt was beneath him so they created the World belt.

I think it happened because WWE broke up all the established teams during the Draft and had to use mid-carders put together to fill up the tag division, thus nullifying any need for a midcard title.
