So I got caught in the rain a week or so ago and my tennis shoes and socks got soaked. I left my tennis shoes in the garage overnight to dry, but it got down to 18 degrees and I think instead of drying they just froze. Once I brought them in they smelled like a wet dog. First I tried spraying them with Febreze, which didn't do anything. Then I stuffed dryer sheets inside them for a couple of days. That helped a little, but not much. Lastly, I wiped them clean with Lysol disinfecting wipes, then sprayed them all over with Lysol spray, then sprayed the inside of a plastic bag, put them in a plastic bag and tied it shut. I left it like that for a couple of days. This morning I went to take them out, and while they smell a little better, they still smell a little like a wet dog.
I know some people say to put them in a washing machine, but they are fairly new Nike running shoes, and I am nervous that they'll get torn up if I do that.
Anyone have any recommendations of what to do?

Running shoes should do fine in the washer, I put mine in all the time. Just skip the dryer and let them dry on a towel. If you dont' want to do that, you'll probably have to scrub with soap and water or just wait for other stenches to cover up the dog.

I had this issue as well. I soaked mine in Lysol. Big mistake.
