I was at RAW Old School in 2010, when he faced Swagger in PA, and saying this as a massive Bryan Mark. You couldn't get a damn person to chant that guy's name during his US Title run. Not a damn one. It's funny how many guys who ended being huge stars came in with an initial whimper. Deacon Batista. Smilin' Randy Orton. "Ringmaster" Steve Austin. Hunter Hearst Helmsley, etc.

When Cena came out, presumably a few weeks into his rapper gimmick since he had a generic theme (I dunno, wasn't able to watch much at the time) but rapped on his way to the ring, the crowd was dead silent. It was a Jinder Mahal-esque crowd murder.

Bryan is probably the most over guy since 2000/2001. His crowd reactions are ridiculous...especially during a time when crowds are generally a lot quieter than in the past.
Ryback got respectably over, but nowhere near Bryan's level.

Ryback was very over, especially by modern standards, but right now Bryan is in that holy promised land of over guys who can even wake up a dead crowd, something precious few - Hogan, Flair, Rock, Austin, maybe a couple of others like Savage and Warrior - have ever been able to do. You can literally have a crowd that's dead all night long and then is electric once Bryan comes out.

Indeed he did, although that's not an entirely fair comparison given that Hogan is past his prime and his return was telegraphed.

nah people just like to chant things. we're all imagining all those times when the crowds chanted for Daniel Bryan specifically and not just his catchphrase. I mean, look how easy it was for Big Show to co-opt his overness by stealing the Yes chants. that's why Big Show's wrestling Triple H and Daniel Bryan had to be the New Years baby.

Sadly, this was true. He was over in NXT and during his initial return to the WWE after Summerslam. But that fizzled off for a while when he was kind of treading water as US Champion. He got a huge pop for winning that belt and beating Miz - not so much when he was fighting goobers like Dibiase for weeks at a time. Not silence, since he definitely got cheers, but he was more at the level of somebody like Kofi or Big E or something right now. I will say this, though - my absolute favorite wrestling memory came at this time. I was at a house show where Bryan took on Tyson Kidd. There was a little kid in front of me, about 5 years old. This kind went NUTS for Bryan the entire match. At one point he turned around and hi-fived me after realizing I was going nuts for Bryan, too. And when the LaBell lock was put on? He turned around, looked me in the eye, and said "NOBODY GETS OUTTA THAT!!!!! IT'S OVER!!!" I have to imagine that kid is probably about the happiest little kid in the world since his favorite guy is now on top and so insanely popular.

Ryback was insanely over in the fall of 2012. Yeah the WWE messed it up a bit, but once Ryback went back down the card some of his weaknesses as a performer became much more prominent. And once those weaknesses become more noticeable people start to turn on you.
And as been said before, you can't stop talent. Ryback in his own way is very talented, but he doesn't have the ability right now to adjust to the change in his direction. Not only did Bryan do that, but CM Punk wasn't exactly treated the greatest before exploding in 2011.
Not to change topic, but it's one of those things where you see guys get hired and sent to NXT that you can look at somebody and realize that they'll make it far because they throw themselves into whatever they do 100%.

Lets release Ryback from his contract and see if people start chanting his name on Raw and PPV's (chanting Goldberg doesn't count ) I like both btw

Ryback wasn't nearly as over as Bryan was, but that's not saying that Ryback wasn't still massively over and that WWE didn't blow it with him, too.

Case in point, Bryan got a bigger pop than Hogan did on Raw on monday. Indeed he did, although that's not an entirely fair comparison given that Hogan is past his prime and his return was telegraphed. Well everyone knew Bryan would be appearing, too, so I think it's a fairer comparison than if Hogan appeared without there being any sort of announcement he'd be there. Hogan's still the most famous professional wrestler of all time (with Rock second), so the fact Bryan's scheduled regular appearance got a bigger pop than Hogan's return after a number of years not being in WWE is, I think, rather telling.

A lot of Ryback's gimmick revolve around him winning - which isn't a bad way to go at all, but it was pretty much destined to be short-lived unless WWE could leverage it into something more. Ryback's thing was all about being booked as a winner - as soon as he wasn't...well. The other thing is, WWE made efforts to book both guys like crap for a little bit there. The fans stayed interested in Bryan and not in Ryback. Ya, can't do the Goldberg push without something along the lines of the Goldberg winning-streak. They definitely could've committed more like WCW did for berg. Of course IMO Goldberg was just better. Never liked how much Ryback played to the crowd and tried to sell his catchphrase. Goldberg's businesslike "who's next?" attitude was more badass. Plus the spear/jackhammer combo blows the clothesline/Samoan drop combo out of the water. Bryan was booked worse and still managed to stay way over. As has been said earlier in the thread he jobbed and toiled around the midcard plenty.
