I'm trying to pinpoint when Macho pretty much abandoned the crown. Outside of the name and the throne he basically dropped everything there was about being a "king." Even the scepter really only came into play at Royal Rumble '91. Why did they bother keeping it up?

I'm pretty sure it was around the summer of 1990 that he stopped wearing the crown, and went to the cowboy hat.

Didn't someone stomp on it? Or am I totally imagining that?

He was still the Macho King until Wrestlemania 7 when he lost a career ending match to the Ultimate Warrior. Their feud started when Savage used the scepter on the Warrior and cost him the WWF title to Slaughter.

Yeah, when he showed up as part of the Superstars announce team right after WM7, he was back to being Macho Man rather than Macho King.

True, but the OP was asking about when Savage stopped wearing the actual crown. At some point in 1990, he started wearing cowboy hats even though he was still "Macho King".

Wasn't he wearing the crown when he bashed Warrior with the scepter?

He was wearing his pre-King doo-rag when he did the run-in during the Warrior/Slaughter match.

And why cowboy hats? Did Vince stumble upon a box of old "Cowboy" Bret Hart gear and begged Macho to use it?

I admit, I kind of think of the cowboy hat stage of Savage when I think of him, followed by the MADNESS gear in white and black. It's only after that where I think of the star trunks, I guess.

I know, but I recall him wearing the crown for the duration of the Macho King moniker, at least in promos and such.
