Vince always loved ECW. Hell the attitude era was basically inspired by ECW While it is true that ECW was a big inspiration for the Attitude Era, I wouldn't say that Vince loved ECW. In countless interviews it has been stated how McMahon very rarely watched any other companies product, and relied very heavily on his inner circle to fill him in on what is going on in other promotions. I would chalk this up to Heyman more then anyone for putting certain guys on the map, and probably Bruce Pritchard (more so then the ol' guard of Patterson, Brisco, Sarge, etc.) religiously following ECW, and in turn bringing edgier ideas to booking meetings. It was the perfect storm. McMahon's more cartoon-y style of booking in 95/96 felt like old hat, and it is much easier to latch on to a hot thing like ECW was at that point. He basically kept ECW afloat for the last few years.

The way I heard it was Vince was in a room with Heyman, Sabu, and some other ECW guys, and going on and on about how Sabu was an "old school wrestler". Then Vince left the room and everyone started cracking up, like "wtf is this guy talking about?"
I think Vince was right in a way though, depending on how he meant that term. Sabu was old-school in the sense that he maintained an aura around his character that fans bought into. He was also the nephew of the original Sheik, so he'd surely have some old-school respect and tradition drummed into him.

His ring-work, not so much...but his character and his aura are very old-school.

I'm not so sure. He didn't do too well in WWE. They never promoted him much, I felt.

I thought Sandman being RAW GM would have been hysterical and worth watching. No it wouldn't have brought us into a new boom period but would have been better than Regal v 3.0
Sabu could have fit a certain mode in WWE, but it would have been strictly midcard

He really needed that evil pizza chef gimmick. Imagine Sabu coming to the ring wearing a poofy chef's hat and a cooking apron stained with pizza sauce, attacking his opponents with big pizza pans and rolling pins.

It was the Sandman that Vince was pretty high on, apparently Vince really liked all of the old ECW wrestlers and bought into Heyman's hype. I can just imagine Vince sitting in front of his TV. "EXIT LIGHT, ENTER NIGHT, TAKE MY HAND, OFF TO NEVER NEVER LAND. Now hit him with the god damn cane you drunk son of a bitch."

Nothing like a brawl in the ring then hearing the first few chords of Enter The Sandman or the lights going off and coming back on with Sabu in the ring pointing up.

Vince is a mark.
Every now and then someone will come down the pipe that he just completely fixates on and I believe Sabu was such a person.
If he's into it, it's your career to lose. You will be pushed.
If he's not, you will job and there will be no consistency to where or when you'll turn up.

I'm not so sure. He didn't do too well in WWE. They never promoted him much, I felt. He was still in the spotlight in ECW. Feuded with Cena during the height of the latter's run as golden boy. Feuded with Big Show and treated as an equal. He would had stuck around longer if Sabu didn't get tired of WWE's corporate environment and self sabotage his push. Once him and RVD got busted for weed, he tried everything to get fired. Remember he "accidentally" left his ring gear and WWE made him wear Davari's for a match? Sabu wanted be a lone wolf not another cog in the wheel.

I always wished Vince "got" or had a man crush on Raven. His character could have went so much further if Vince had got behind it and didn't say "who the f*** hired Raven???"

I never understood the appeal of the Sandman. He f***ing sucked. With the WWE Network, I get to relive Sandman's unwillingness to take bumps. I mean he never jumps off the turnbuckle he just walks off.

He liked Scott Levy, just didn't see a future for him as a wrestler. Had Raven accepted a backstage role, he and Shane would probably be running the place now.

I'm not sure about that. Vince didn't like Shane n Scott partying together every night, according to Raven's shoot.

Maybe that's why Vince loved the guy, to be the face of the Hispanic & Latino people post-Eddie? Del Rio vs "Mexico's Own" Sandman for the right to be the man of the people at Wrestlemania 30!
