to zebra stripes? At Wrestlemania X they were still wearing the blue shirt and bow tie, but by Wrestlemania XI they were wearing the referee stripes.
Anyone know specifically when they made the switch? Did the announcers mention it or anything when it happened?

I didn't actually realise it was this early, I didn't think the zebra stripes came in until 1997ish.

Looking at the PPV's, they were still using the bow ties at the 1995 Rumble, so the change was either some TV taping between then or at Wrestlemania XI itself.

I believe they played with the ref's uniforms a bit after, I'd say, the mid-90s, possibly the Attitude era. It was definitely the blue shirt and bow tie up until at least '92 (possibly to link wrestling with boxing - there may have been state regulations in play at the time as well). Then, it seemed to go back and forth between the stripes and the blue polo/golf shirts before it settled on what they're wearing now.

Mania 11 was the first time I made note of it, may be this show.

Yeah I think they started using them at Wrestlemania 11 or little bit after Royal Rumble 1995 since the old shirts where used at that show I think.

Wow, I was gonna say 1997 as well - with the advent of the Attitude Era. WM11's surprisingly early...
I've always linked that attire change and the debut of the Titantron together, for some reason.

I miss the WCW and Smackdown ref shirts. Those things were cool.

I was also a huge fan of the SmackDown blue ref shirts. Was surprised they didn't do red ones for RAW.
Chikara's blue ref shirts were pretty similar to the SmackDown shirts.

Red is too bright a color, you generally don't want fans eyes being dawn to the refs. That's why I liked the old drab grey shirt bow tie look. The refs looked like busboys...anonymous.

I'd imagine they did it backstage, in the locker room, before the event starts.
