I enjoyed Rushmore, Royal Tenenbaums, and Moonrise Kingdom. Lost in Translation still holds up I have never seen them... other than a bit of Moonrise Kingdom (I think it was that one) and didn't really like it though it was a random couple of scenes in the middle so I don't really count that as valid judgement but I do know for a fact that my brother hates like all of Wes Anderson's movies... at least the recent ones he's seen anyway. The topic of discussion is a milage may vary statement to begin with . Marlon Brando had all these classic movies like On the Waterfront, Streetcar named Desire, The Godfather, Apocalypse Now to Island of Dr. Morreau and The Freshman Orson Welles goes From Citizen Kane to his Final Role as Unicron in the animated Transformers film

Any actor/comic/actress who has been around for a long period of time falls into this trope

Eddie Murphy comes to mind as well, especially in recent years That's the first person that popped into my mind. The man seems to take whatever movie is thrown at him.

Michael Caine has to be up there too, he's another guy that would take any paycheck and has been in some horrible stuff to go alongside things like Alfie and the Dark Knight Trilogy.

Gotta be Robin Williams. On one hand he has Aladdin, One Hour Photo, Good Will Hunting, The Fisher King and Dead Poets Society (plus a rather sweet Zelda commercial) then on the flipside he's got Patch Adams, Old Dogs, Flubber, RV and Jack.

Eddie Murphy comes to mind as well, especially in recent years that guy has to be like impossible to work with or something, because all his movies involve him playing like 5-6 different characters.

I can only assume it's him trying to recapture the magic of like Coming to America where he played a bunch of different characters and it worked. Granted he only played one MAJOR character and a bunch of minor characters and not several Major characters. But still.

Matthew McConaughey. He'll do crappy movies like the Wedding Planner and Failure to Launch and do an amazing job in the Lincoln Lawyer to make up for it. Yeah my timeline for McConaughey is from Lincoln Lawyer onwards is easily te best time in his career, he has finally stopped f***ing about and is doing the things he has had potential to do from the start. Loved Lincoln Lawyer, Bernie, Killer Joe, Mud, Dallas Buyers Club, his part in WOWS was great and from what I have seen of True Detective he is great in that as well. And lets face it the guy is one of the smoothest people alive, you don't get much chiller than him. First person who came to mind was Will Smith, despite loving the guy, he hasn't had the best track record lately. Pick your game up son!

Cuba Gooding Jr? I mean he won an Oscar then pretty much immediately started starring in nothing but crap What sucks about this is that Gooding is a really talented actor when he wants to be. The one he did with DeNiro was great. SPEAKING OF: DeNiro. There's someone who has put out some classics and also managed to star in some absolute garbage. Silver Linings Playbook is the first movie in ages that felt like he actually brought his A game.

Chevy Chase. He was the breakout star of the early SNL era while doing movies like Caddyshack, National Lampoons Vacation, Fletch, Three Amigos and then ruin his career with Cops and Robbersons, Nothing But Trouble, The Chevy Chase Show, etc. Bill Murrary. does the Garfield movies and makes up for it with his Wes Anderson work. Depending who you ask he they might not agree that he made up for it with his Wes Anderson work Though he does get passes for pretty much the rest of his body of work... According to Murray himself, the only reason he signed onto Garfield was because he saw that Joel Coen (A Coen Brother) wrote the screenplay. But it was actually Joel Cohen, the legendary writer of Daddy Day Camp and Cheaper By the Dozen. And Bill Murray has really good material outside of Anderson's work. I love Anderson films. Lost In Translation, Broken Flowers, Groundhog Day, and a lot of people liked Ed Wood.

Also I was saying though that Ghostbusters, Stripes, Groundhog day, Caddyshack, etc. make up for Garfield regardless of what you think of Anderson films

A couple of examples where he played multiple roles that really weren't good were "Vampire In Brooklyn" and "Nutty Professor II: The Klumps." The first "Nutty Professor" movie was actually funny in some areas and I enjoyed it to some degree, but the second one was just not good in my opinion.

Gotta give a mention to Morgan Freeman, at least critically if not commercially. Balance Shawshank Redemption, Unforgiven, Se7en, Driving Miss Daisy, Million Dollar Baby, Dark Knight Trilogy, and Invictus against dross like Evan Almighty, High Crimes, Dreamcatcher, Last Vegas, Along Came a Spider, Chain Reaction, Kiss the Girls, Lucky Number Slevin, and practically anything else he's been in since 2005 that I didn't mention in the 'good' list.
He's one of the all time greats, but he's not above just taking a paycheque.

Indeed. You can never say that he phones in any of his performances, no matter how awful the film is.
