There have been some very long title reigns in wrestling history but many get a bad wrap Here's my steps to avoid doing that
1) Make sure it's the right person: They need to be a person that can capture the fans' attention as well as consistently work great matches. e.g Joe, Danielson, Mcguinness.
2) Avoid repetitive booking: Joe held the ROH title for nearly two years and the fans never got bored of it, that's because consistently he would have a story going at all times between his series with Punk, his wars with Homicide, and his feud with the Briscoes he never had the same match twice. Compare to Gargano whose whole reign had three storylines two of which were resolved rather quickly and his reign lasted about two and a half years.
3) Have title defenses fairly often: It seems ridiculous to have a title holder who scarcely ever defends the belt or has a small number of defenses given the time they've held it Like Gargano having only defended it 20 or so times in two and a half years, compared to Danielson who held it for 15 months and defended it 36 times
4) Don't have them hold it so long people get bored with the product: this goes with #2 Gargano's biggest problem is his title reign lasted 2 1/2 years and he only defended it in a non standard situation twice and it got to the point when he finally lost the belt no one really cared any more. Compare Samoa Joe who held the belt 3 months shy of 2 years had many matches in non standard situations such as his bloodbath cage match with Jay.
5) Make sure that you have a rather wide variety of challengers: It gets boring to see the same match like 4 or 5 times in the reign, even though Danielson held the belt for 15 months and defended against Cabana 4 times he'd defended against so many other people and ins o many other situations that his reign never felt repetitive.
6) Make it believable when they finally lose the title: When Joe finally lost to Aries for the title, Aries used a mixture of various people who nearly beat Joe's strategies on Joe, and melded them into one strategy which allowed him to beat him.
Anything I missed?
