So I've seen a lot of posts saying The Steak ending tonight was the most shocking thing they've seen in wrestling, so for the purposes of scientific analysis, I thought I'd put it up against the previous consensus winner of most shocking night in wrestling (ring resultswise, at least. No deaths or real life incidents here), The Montreal Screwjob?
So which stunned ya more, FAN? Taker losing or Bret getting screwed?

The mentally disabled neanderthal ending the streak, for me. I wasn't really old enough to realize what was going on with the Montreal situation to be extremely shocked.
Owen's accident beats them both, in my opinion.

C. Damien legit biting Randy Savage
as shocking as the streak ending tonight...that snake legitimately tried to kill Randy Savage. I have never been as shocked. Not even tonight could top it.

Montreal, but the real answer is that time Headhunter #2 re-entered the Royal Rumble at the same time as his twin brother.

Lesnar winning was more anticlimactic than it was shocking. Don't really care though, love Lesnar and that match was terrible.

Montreal was more shocking, but since Bret made good graces, it's lost its luster.

Bret's Montreal Screw Job was shocking, and it made for must see TV. The curtain got pulled back a little. But, as a 17 year old when it happened, it didn't seem impossible. It was known that Bret was on his way out. The next night, we were given confirmation to everything by Vince.
Owen's death was shocking. Oddly, the only PPV that year that I didn't go to my friend's house to watch. He called & told me about what happened as it was reported on the PPV. And, my reaction was fairly stereotypical of receiving such a call... Like, "Wait what? .... Oh... (silence)." Absolutely a shocking moment in terms of wrestling that I'll always remember.
I don't watch a lot of tv. But, when I do, it's the sports teams that I follow, shows like The Voice with my daughter, and wrestling. I see how people react when shows like "How I Met Your Mother" and "The Walking Dead" have "shocking moments online. I've sat in rooms with friends when they watch an episode of an "epic" show that they follow and they're blown away by the onscreen story. Tonight's Taker/Lesnar match elicited such a response from me. It was shocking. Captivating. It left me speechless & in a state of "Holy Shit." Incredible Television.

Prisoners of the moment. Montreal was otherworldly in terms in controversy. If there was social networking in 1997, that would have damn near shut down Twitter for a few hours. It was that big of a deal. And keep in mind, this was late '97, when a lot of people thought WWF was about to roll over real soon and losing Bret to the competition would be the final nail in the coffin.
I'm not underscoring the shock of tonight (this could be number 3 for me all-time).
But number one has been mentioned, Owen.
