Were Bret and Bulldog acknowledged to be brothers in law before the buildup to Summerslam? In fact were Bret and/or Owen acknowledged to be Anvil's brother(s) in law before the Owen/Bret feud in '94?

Yep. Infact they showed Diana Hart Smith in the crowd a few times during the match.

I dont know wether it was acknowledged in the 80's during the Bulldog/Harts feud but it was in 1992, I found it really odd as a kid, I started watching 1 year earlier at SS 91 and those two were two of my favourites, I enjoyed them teaming at 1991 SS, then all of a sudden out no where they were announced as brothers in law out of no where - they showed Diana doing a really awful crying promo at one point on the porch of her house. Cant remember if Anvil was ever announced as a family member in 1994 though. I vaguely remember it being mentioned at KOTR 94 when he returned unless im dreaming.
On another note I never understood why he was with Bret one minute in the Diesel match then with Owen in the finals, they should have left him with Bret for longer as a throw back to the HF days and done a big turn angle.

It was a focus of the match. Diana was torn between her brother and her husband. She didnt want them fighting.

I love how when they all reconcile at the end of the match Diana is all teary eyed while encouraging Bret and Davey Boy to hug it out and Heenan on commentary says "She's only crying because she knows her brother's not gonna buy her anything for Christmas anymore!"

Heenan's commentary is largely awful for that match though. He didn't really know how to sell face vs. face drama, so he simply poked fun at everything. I think Gorilla and Jesse would have called that show better. Heenan was brilliant when he had a heel to call in the ring though, such as at the 1992 Rumble with Flair.
I don't recall them mentioning Bret and Bulldog being in-laws before that build however. If they did I don't recall it. Ironically I'd say that build more or less started about 5 years of overall Bret storylines if you think about it.

I could have swore that during the Hart Foundation as a tag team, they would have probably acknowledged Jim and Bret being brothers in law. It'd be really weird if the story of them teaming was presented as: Jimmy: "You know, my last name is Hart!" Bret: "Mine, too!" Jim: "Me three! Well, sort of, there's a Neid part at the beginning." Jimmy: "Well, damn, son, that's close enough for me!"

Umm what is not to get? It was a setup for Owen to have The Anvil cost/hurt Bret in his match and side with Owen. Because both were in the shadow of Bret. Wrestling booking 101 right there.

I really don't remember much build to the match at all aside from Mean Gene in his 'update' segments.

Probably, I just cant retain any memory of it.I think the decision to but Bulldog in that match was quite late, so possibly it was all done in commentary.

Probably, I just cant retain any memory of it.I think the decision to but Bulldog in that match was quite late, so possibly it was all done in commentary. Not really. From Wiki: One of the main events was the Intercontinental Championship match between Bret Hart and Davey Boy Smith, brothers-in-law in real life. Smith was married to Diana Hart, Bret's sister.[2] On television broadcasts leading up to SummerSlam, interviews with Diana and her mother Helen portrayed the family as being torn apart by the upcoming match. Bruce Hart publicly supported Smith, while Owen Hart sided with his brother Bret.[3] Diana stated that she did not know who she wanted to win the match, as she had close ties to both men. She ultimately stated that she simply hoped that neither wrestler would get hurt.[4] Prior to the match, Smith was hospitalized with a legitimate staph infection in his knee, which he suffered during a match with Iron Mike Sharpe on July 20 in Worcester, Massachusetts (the fact was revealed by his wife Diana years later on the Hart & Soul DVD); despite the concerns about his health, he decided to wrestle the match as planned. And I do remember a lot of how it was built up, and how it was a family thing. Whenever I think of Helen Hart I think of Owen throwing in the towel and laughing and she was heartbroken during the Bret/Backlund match... but I do remember the family getting involved in the SummerSlam build up.

I distinctly remember when they first announced Bret vs. Bulldog and mentioned that they were brothers-in-law that I stared at the screen and said: "Huh?"
And then I wondered why they never touched on the Harts and Danny Davis screwing the Bulldogs out of the belts five years earlier.

Davey was willing to take one for the team if it meant screwing over Dynamite.
