I was going through a thread about rumoured world title runs and somewhere along the way I realized that Piper has never had a world title run in WWE or WCW. Admittedly, I was shocked. This is a guy who's main evented Wrestlemania, a guy who's been a huge part of Wrestling for decades. I'm not as surprised that he didn't have a WWE title as a WCW world championship. His WWF run was in a different time. Still, most of the really big WWF guys who jumped to WCW held the world title at some point (or at least it seemed that way).
Is anyone else as surprised that he was never a world champ? Strangely enough, I think with the career he's had it doesn't really detract from him that he hasn't. Heck he hasn't had many title reigns at all compared to most people with vaguely comparable careers and yet he's still one of the greats.

He's one of those guys like DiBiase and Jake Roberts who was as effective without one as he would have been with one, for the most part, so I don't think he felt he needed it.

The best time frame for him to win it IMO would have been between Sept./early fall of 1985 briefly to early 1986, right before Hogan/Bundy. But other than that, he was over without it.

Back then, World title runs weren't passed around like candy.

He had at least one clean PPV win over Hogan while Hogan was WCW champion. With the number of times that title hot potatoed I'm shocked he didn't get a turn.

Back then, World title runs weren't passed around like candy. Yup, those types of things where you started to see heels with the title began during the New Age and especially during the Attitude Era. Had Piper been wrestling then, he likely would've been a multi-time champion. But as others have pointed out, holding the belt isn't enough, it's the storylines, charisma, and person that make the moment. Piper will always be remembered for being someone you wanted to watch.

It is really strange that he never became WCW champ having beat Hogan clean while he was champ and pinning Goldberg. The Hogan thing was just bizarre.

If he had, we wouldn't have gotten that incredible "I never won the World Title" promo he gave during the Cena/Barrett feud a few years ago.

I've never bought the "never needed it" argument.
I think that's just what people say to console those who never got it. If it's only on people who "needed" it then Hogan, Savage, Cena, Austin, Bryan, Rock, Bret, Taker, Foley, HHH and many more, would never have had it or if they did only for a very brief time.
Piper never got the strap because he wasn't a top player for very long and while he was we were at the cusp of Hulkamania. A lot of guys back then didn't get world title because the "didn't need it", but rather they couldn't have it, IMO. The belt is on the top guy (mostly) rather than being on the guy who needs it. It isn't an elevation belt, it's a crowning achievement and recognition of the spot you hold.
Piper was the second most over guy in the first two years of the WWF's television explosion and then kinda slipped away down the card and into other areas of entertainment, returning to commentate and the occasional match. I think that had far more to do with it than not needing the belt.

I get that his time in wwf he wouldn't get the belt. It was a different time. It's more that he didn't get the world title in wcw that surprised me for the reasons others mentioned. Given the list of people who picked it up, I figured he would have been in the rotation at some point.

I just wish he would've got better Wrestlemania opponents. Bad News Brown? Adrian Adonis? The Mountie? Why didn't he feud with any of the big names aside from Hogan?

With how little he jobbed, he would have held the thing for like 10 years. I just wish he would've got better Wrestlemania opponents. Bad News Brown? Adrian Adonis? The Mountie? Why didn't he feud with any of the big names aside from Hogan? Bret at 8 and Goldust at 12 were awesome.

I'm not a fan of the backlot brawl.

I almost think of Piper at a promo man/manager rather than a wrestler. Outside of one or two matches, I struggle to even remember any matches he had. He wasn't that great in ring. His 100% gift was verbal.

The need to have the belt to get over today is greater than it was 20-30 years ago.

There's still time!! Piper can have epic feuds with guys like Dean Ambrose or Bray Wyatt.

Adonis was a great wrestler in his time, but he was saddled with an awful gimmick when he faced Piper. The Mountie was a great wrestler, and he also never faced Piper at WrestleMania.

Funny thing is the likes of Dibiase, Piper, Jake the Snake are far greater legends than 10, 11, 12 time World Champions like Edge, Orton & Batista ever will

I wasn't sure about Mountie. Knew I should've looked it up. I would've liked to have seen a Savage feud.
