Let's face it. Many of the shows that we grew up from this era were crap. But there were things to like about it. I want to know what you think is the best and worst of animation from this era. As far as TV goes, here's my list: Best: Rocky and Bullwinkle, The Sword and the Stone, anything Ralph Bakshi, anything Peanuts Worst: The Abbott and Costello cartoon, Gene Deitch's Tom and Jerry, Funky Phantom, My Little Pony G1 tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TheDarkAgeOfAnimation

Fits in with your Rankin Bass statement but I think the Animated Hobbit movie needs to be stated by name.
Also Love Disney's Jungle Book and Robin Hood

I honestly think Watership Down is the best western animated film of the 70s. Great voice acting, incredible soundtrack, gorgeous animation, and a generally gripping story to boot.

Mr. Benn and Danger Mouse leap to mind as cult classics of British animation from this time.

Best: Rocky and Bullwinkle and Friends. One of the most cleverly written cartoons ever. Worst: Too many to mention, but for me overall it would have to be The Warner Bros. Cool Cat shorts of the late 1960's. If there ever was an anti comedy equation, this character would be the answer.

i basically lived 70's and 80's cartoons ..... and a few normal tv shows BATFINK, ROGER RAMJET and especially SUPERCHICKEN has me rolling, and with the other saturday morning staples in the UK like SUPER MARIO, PAC MAN and SONIC ..... but it's the collosus's of BANANA SPLITS, PINK PANTHER and HANNA BARBERA that really stand out WAIT TIL YOUR FATHER COMES HOME was another giant in my viewing eyes, along with HAIR BEAR BUNCH, WACKY RACES and it's associate spin offs, CAPTAIN CAVEMAN for the "obvious" attractions ..... and being a big fan of GLEN MICHAELS CAVALCADE here in scotland, showing the 60's and 70's stuff on a sunday afternoon but still, SPACE SENTINELS, CENTURIANS and reading EAGLE MAGAZINE fed my appetite for comic adventures, and that 101 DALMATIONS may well have been the first movie i saw in the cinema!

I'm only familiar with Danger Mouse and Count Duckula. I dig some Duckula, though.

Warner Brothers shelving their iconic characters for Cool Cat and those others were a travesty. This era is depressing to read about, animation was just bad in a lot of cartoons in this era.

I don't disagree with the assessment, but it still brings to mind pretentious pricks like John K.
Regardless, how about The Fox and the Hound? Always had a soft spot for that as Disney movies go.
Superfriends had some flashes of brilliance as it went on, and especially the Super Powers season. But was curbed by the no-violence thing.
Voltron, and actually, Vehicle Voltron had deeper, more involved stories.

Cool Cat was the f***ing Caddyshack 2 of the Looney Tunes I was obsessed with Cool Cat just for the copious amounts of airings Nickelodeon gave him when they had a hard-on for the '60s LT shorts. And what about the eyesore that was the opening logo and intro to THOSE?!!?

Is Speed Racer a part of this ill-defined time period?
If so, then I'd say Speed Racer.

Some of Disney's output then IMO was way better than initially given credit for, but that might be due to Don Bluth working there at the time(Rescuers, Small One, etc). Banjo The Woodpile Cat is fun, but you won't be able to look at it the same once you read the synopsis of the original story (which is pretty damn hardcore).
As far as Bakshi, check out Coonskin and American Pop. Heavy Traffic is kind of a muddled mess, though.
