My Wii has been used more or less as a Gamecube over the past three years. It's just a fantastic system that never gets much love because it was the middle brother between the N64 and the Wii, while also being part of the same generation as probably the greatest system of all time (PS2).

The GameCube was probably the last Nintendo system not to rely on a gimmick, and was the last time they were on the cutting edge, graphics wise(the GameCube and Xbox both had their own specific edges over each other, but by and large both killed the PS2 graphics-wise).
Damn shame it didn't sell better.

I'll forever proclaim my love for Nintendo's little lunchbox. The only time I bought a system JUST for a game (that being Resident Evil 4) and I didn't look back on it, even if I only had a few games for it.

I love the Gamecube. If my arguments with my friends in high school are any indication, it didn't sell well for three reasons:
1) It looks like a purse 2) It can't play DVDs 3) It only has baby kiddie games (I heard this false argument a lot)

It was my favorite system of that generation and one of my favorite systems period.
So many great games and the memories of staying up through weekends, playing Smash Bros. and Day Of Reckoning with friends, having unintentionally hilarious Scooby-Doo-like chases in RE 4, pissing myself in fear when I first played Eternal Darkness...
Great times.

I've always thought it was a very underrated system and now it's getting the respect it deserves. I just think it came out at a time where the hardcore gamer was starting to take value over the Casual gamer. It just came out at a bad time I think is why it did not sell too well.
You can pick one up now for like $30-$40 and it's worth every cent.

Great console from top to bottom. Still think the Day of Reckoning series was massively underrated

Waste so many hours on Day of Reckoning, Super Smash Bros, and Soul Caliber 2. I think it would had done better if they used DVD/regular disc instead of those mini disc. When you think about it, the gamecube is probably the last Nintendo console with decent third party supported too.

The Gamecube came out at a kind of nexus point of graphics and gameplay, where the graphics are good enough to still look great now but they weren't so good that developers could rely on the same old shit so much. Games on the Cube have aged really, really well largely because they made no effort to be photo realistic and instead tried to look cool and play well - Timesplitters 2, Wind Waker, Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters, F-Zero GX, that sort of thing.

If I had to make a list of my 50 favorite games of all time, I imagine at least 15 would be Gamecube games.
Windwaker, Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem, Metroid Prime, Luigi's Mansion etc.

The sad thing is that Day of Reckoning 2 looks more realistic than WWE 2K14, so even more photo realistic games could work on the Gamecube regardless.

Yeah I remember the graphics for Day of Reckoning 2 being ridiculously good and I don't think any WWE game has topped them yet.

Loved the Gamecube. It was a great system. It didn't seem to get a lot of love at the time though.

I have mad love for the GameCube and actually play it more than the PS2. I actually consider it a better console than the Wii even if the latter sold more.

I initially didn't want to get it, however after I watched a friend play Mario Sunshine, I picked it up. Still my favorite Mario 3D environment game.

The PS2 was already out and the Xbox stole it's thunder with HALO. If it had randomly beat the PS2 to the punch, it would have fared a lot better I think.
I certainly didn't get one. There was nothing I HAD to play on it. But HAL0 and DOA 3 made the Xbox a must have for me, and the PS2 was the system for JRPGs.
I imagine the backlash from the art direction on Wind Waker, and the choice to release the nonstandard Mario game, Luigi's Mansion really didn't help either.

Damn right it was. Eternal Darkness and The Metroid Prime games alone justify owning it. It was also the first system I played TimeSplitters 2 on, so good memories there too. Honestly, I'm very confused as to why this console was so overlooked when the Wii and Nintendo DS were such enormous successes. It's not even like the GC was poor compared to the Xbox and PS2 (PS2 remains my favourite but come on, GC was almost as good). I imagine the backlash from the art direction on Wind Waker, and the choice to release the nonstandard Mario game, Luigi's Mansion really didn't help either. Yeah, as much as I hate the fact that they do it, stuff like that prevents from blaming Nintendo for making the same games over and over again with little to no changes because it seems every time they try to do something different, people go "urgh, INNOVATIONS?! We want the same old crap! We will not even give this one a chance!".
