I know I was watching when it happened but what the hell was the basis for a 55 year old Chavo Guerrero Sr to return and become Cruiserweight champion? Smackdown got so terrible so quickly in 2004 and it definitely did a lot to kill my interest in wrestling so my memory of this period is kind of fuzzy. He was quite funny and entertaining as I recall but what was the deal with this?

Well Jacqueline was the crusierweight champ during this time iirc. Chavo lost it to her and I guess Chavo Classic won it in some match before getting kicked off the road for partying too much.

Yeah I seem to recall being a referee for Cruiserweight matches and some call she made pissing off Chavo Classic or something.

Smackdown 2004 was a really confusing time period. Almost more confusing then Smackdown 2003

The Chavos was about the last thing I remember enjoying before giving up watching wrestling for about ten years.

Chavo (Jr.) was always pretty funny and he played off his father very well. Even though he was way past his prime, I don't even consider Chavo Classic to be an 'absurd' (WWE.com's word) Cruiserweight Champion. He was a very good wrestler in the 1980s and could still take some bumps and pull-off some moves. Him winning the Cruiserweight Championship was not nearly as bad as when Hornswoggle won it.

I think I was a couple years out of it by the time Hornswoggle debuted so thankfully I think I missed that.

I remember even the more curmudgeonly of wrestling newsletters and dourly opinionated dirt sheet writers still having to give it to the WWE that, despite their hating the angle, calling Chavo Sr. "Chavo Classic" was pretty f***ing hilarious and downright inspired.
