I may as well straight up admit what I doubt many other people on here will, and that is that I am a straight up hypocrite on this issue. Do I hate Austin? No. I enjoy his work, he seems like a nice guy, and I try to pretend the Debra thing didn't happen. Given it was the only occurrence of this in his life, I generally try to tell myself that everyone does shit they regret and that after 11 years he would likely have served his time regardless. Do I hate Chris Brown? Yes. I am no fan of the guy's work, his crime was MUCH more recent and sticks in the mind, and he has continued to generally act like a massive prick ever since. He has also given a series of hilariously insincere apologies, and pled no contest rather than guilty. I can't remember Austin's plea. I think it was guilty, but then, I might be just remembering that the way I want it to be. Ultimately, I've always been an advocate of attempting to separate the artist from the crime within reason, but that's a whole shitload easier when I didn't like the work in the first place. I am a hypocrite, and I know this. I think this plays a huge role in it. It's the same reason many of the people who defended Michael Jackson now want Bryan Singer's head on a stick. To be fair, both their major cases are/were pretty skunky when you look into the backgrounds and presumed motives of their accusers.

I just know that I have friends who defended Michael Jackson to the nines and now keep ragging on Bryan Singer for essentially the same situation with the same amount of proof.

equal rights, equal fights. "Want legal equality? Sorry, that means carte blanche for someone twice your size to beat the shit out of you." I'll be honest, this is a bloody terrifying perspective on the world.

Because it's become nothing more than a punchline these days.

I approve of this poetry. Is it Kitsune like a prune, or Kitsune like puny? I can't really ask, I'll look a loon - or a loony.

I can't really appreciate Austin in the same light ever since I found out about this and yes it is disheartening to see it glossed over at best and joked about at worst these days. Unfortunately there's such a big dark side to wrestling that you kind of have to turn away from to still enjoy it.

Unfortunately there's such a big dark side to wrestling that you kind of have to turn away from to still enjoy it. Honestly, I find the jokes about it much more disgusting than the people just pretending it didn't happen or trying to justify it. The clamouring in the gifs thread for the gif of Austin beating Debra in a game, followed by the enthusiastic response, turned my stomach.

Can someone shed some light on the whole situation? I've read jokes about in passing but I've never really read about the extent of the abuse, how it was handled in court, how Vince and the company reacted, etc.

There's no rhyme or reason to it. Why is Chris Brown a pariah and Sean Penn a respected actor? f*** Sean Penn.

Same reason why Charlie Sheen drugged out antics got treated a joke he was in on and he got rewarded with a Roast and new TV show while your Amanda Bynes and Lindsay Lohans got ridiculed.
edit
With that said, Chris Brown is a scumbag in general. Even ignoring the Rihanna abuse, the guy is finding himself in trouble over and over again. If Austin were in his role....yeah he'd be Chris Benoit 2.0 for the wrestling community.

I've read jokes about in passing but I've never really read about the extent of the abuse, how it was handled in court, how Vince and the company reacted, etc. Best I can remember the story, Austin and Debra got into a drunken argument that escalated into a fight. Debra called the cops and Austin was arrest. Austin pled no contest and had to do community service and stay sober for a year. This was during his walkout so WWE didn't bother with it. Debra has claimed it happened over everything from steroids to coke and I've heard rumors that she was the one that struck first but since she called the cops it was Austin that got in trouble (he was also caught driving a car on his property while drinking by a TV news crew that was tipped off). This is why a lot of people don't care about this incident quite frankly. There is no real story to it other than Austin got arrested and pled out.
