NFL is big in the UK now, it's more the whole "football in the US is almost totally using hands" thing. I think Rugby clubs have "football club" in their names too and that's the same. It's a can of worms. I read something the other day (can't remember where) that suggested the "Foot" in "football" is actually to do with the line markers because America uses the imperial system. I'm not sure how accurate that was or if it was just someone coming up with something at a stretch to justify it being called football I have no problem with it being called "american Football" but hearing it just called Football angers me, I'm not even really a fan of football You seem to be under the impression that American football, both the name and the sport, is based off of Association football. That's not true. "Soccer" as we know it today isn't nearly as old of a sport as many people seem to believe. Football is a very old term referring to any sport played on foot, as opposed to sports like polo that are played on horseback. Sports like Association football, American football, Rugby football and Australian Rules football are different football rule sets that developed all around the same time. American football has as much of a right to simply call itself football as Association football does.
