Yes I wish WWE had the rights to these. I don't know where this idea originated, but unless WCW didn't bring cameras to an event or a tape is lost/damaged, WWE has all WCW footage. The fact that a show only aired in an specific market doesn't matter. I always thought the TV-Station had the rights to the WCW-PPV. Then again maybe the E just can't be bothered to produce new commentary for this. IIRC they had only German commentary during the live airing.

The Big Event wasn't a PPV though, at least I don't think so. It was a big stadium show but really kind of an important house show. Think of it as similar to the AWA SuperClash shows of that time period, but with more people. I seem to recall this show being, well, what it was. Namely, it is 1986 era WWF stuff. There's some good, there's some bad. I still don't know what Orndorff did to get the DQ in the main event.

Big Event and Wrestlefest 88 were always my favorites to rent. I still enjoy watching them to this day. I think Big Event was the forerunner to WrestleMania III. The event that made Vince realize he could do the Silver Dome with Hogan/Andre. Big Event was a house show but based on size and the quality of PPVs at the time, it could have been a summer PPV. Wrestlefest was great too despite a smaller feel to it because of the crowd. I wonder if the commentators were really at it though because it seems like they are superimposed on the background and we never do see them in the broadcast booth.
I saw the 24/7 not too long ago and was literally (in Gorilla's terms) drooling at seeing some of the missing footage like guys entrances left in and the Heenan interview was much earlier in the card. As for Coliseum Video, they generally took out so much but seeing the CNE footage before the show had me literally drooling as a kid. To this day I would love to go to the CNE. It seems like the one thing that hasn't changed for the worse in 30 years.
I do wonder what was up with Ladd and Valiant leaving for a match but I guess with it really being a house show, it didn't matter. Typical Gorilla makes it seem like they took the time to go to the local grocery store for some snacks and sodas when they were probably just hitting the mini bar in the suite.

I think it was totally a house show and then when they realized how big it was they decided to tape it for video.
There was actually a big problem with seating during the show. Slam Wrestling had a great 20th anniversary article on their site. IIRC the way the floor seats were situated and with so many people, it became very difficult for people to see.

Meh, I was hoping Clash of the Champions would win this round. I'm going to start watching The Big Event though. This is the first week I'm actually participating. I hate seeing Orndorff lose to Hogan, but we'll see how this goes. I don't think I've ever seen this show in it's entirety before.
Edit: I just realized Clash is on next week's poll.

Thoughts on The Big Event so far...
- That intro video of the Toronto skyline was awesome - First match - first thoughts - YAWN - I wish Jimmy Hart was still a manager in WWE. He and Heath Slater seem like a match made in heaven. - The Killer B's used a heel tactic (the ol' switcheroo) to win the match, but yet they were the clear babyfaces in that match. It's nice to know that's not a recent trend in WWE where faces cheat to win sometimes. - Meng vs. Muraco was boring, but that's not a knock on those performers. - Ted Arcidi almost put me to sleep. - "Adorable" Adrian Adonis is pretty rediculous, even by today's standards. - I remember Dirty Dick Slater. I sure don't remember "Rebel" Disk Slater though. - I've never seen so many people wearing a single strap singlet than there were in that 6 man tag team match.
That's it for now. I'll watch the rest tomorrow...

Rebel Dick Slater wasn't much in WWF but he lasted until mid 1987 and even had a t-shirt for sale through the catalog. It was cool to see Mike Sharpe get a match on the show. The WWF was packed at this time. There were a lot of guys on the card but still some notables missing (Sheik, Volkoff, Bulldogs, Savage, Santana, Orton, Steele, Hillbilly) and a few guys would debut shortly after the show (Koko, Sika, Kamala, Tama) and a few months afterward (Honkytonk, Butch Reed).

Well I watched the second half of the PPV tonight. Picking up where I left off last nights, here's my random thoughts:
- Giant Machine was such a puzzling gimmick. It seems that if Andre is on the card, you want to advertise that Andre is on the card... eh, but what do I know? - Bobby Heenan can bump like a mofo. - King Kong Bundy should be in the WWE Hall of Fame. - Ricky Steamboat vs. Jake Roberts is a nice treat. I think these two were my favorite guys when I was a kid in the 80s. Steamboat never had a bad match it seems. He was the man. - The only thing interesting about Hercules vs Billy Jack Haynes is the outfit on Haynes. The 60,000 fans are dead silent in this one. Even Gorilla Monsoon sounded bored. The other commentators must have taken a bathroom break during this match. - Greg Valentine wore the same trunks as his opponents. How annoying. - The referee in that match (Valentine & Beefcake vs. The Rougeaus) has the slowest 3 count in the history of 3 counts. I don't know who that is, but he's horrible in this match. - Another babyface team pulls the switcheroo to win! - Race vs. Morales was super short. This referee is why people hate referees. - Speaking of referees, the one in the main event pulled Hogan off Orndorff by his hair. It's been a long time since I've seen a ref do that. - I've always thought Orndorff would make a great world champion.

Andre was suspended for whatever reason, and everyone knew it was him under the mask, but Hernan couldn't prove it.

Two matches from Big Event occurred at WrestleMania as well: Haynes/Hercules and Dream Team/Rougeaus. Interesting to think of how packed the roster was at the time and they wound up facing each other again, 7 months later. Now, they'd have faced eight different guys on eight different PPVs.
You're probably right about the bathroom break for Ladd and Valiant, though leave it to Gorilla to make them leaving sound interesting.
Someone noted earlier how full the crowd seemed and I think it's because the the closeness of all the seats throughout the stadium. With Silverdome, there was a long, wide aisle. CNE looked packed to capacity.
I think even WWF favored the Big Event crowd as it was used for the opening of "Spotlight" which was on until early 1988, IIRC. They also used it for the box cover of Wrestlefest 88. I didn't know it was Big Event's crowd on the box and remember being disappointed the WF crowd wasn't so full.
Does anyone know why the ring was raised at CNE? I'm guessing WM III and VI were raised because of the ring carts but what about BE and WM VIII and Summerslam 92? Was it something to do with the structure of the stadiums?

THOUGHTS WHILE WATCHING STARRCADE 96
Bischoff looks so ridiculous in a Scottish getup. Meh opening video. DUSTEH ON COMMETAREH BABEH! Dusty: Hogan vs Piper will be match of da centureh! ....Just a shame it was a bait and switch non-title.
J-CROWN vs CRUISERWEIGHT TITLE - Ultimate Dragon (hate that Anglicization) vs Dean Malenko
Techincally, a WWF title is defended on WCW PPV as the Light Heavyweight title is part of the J-Crown. Mike Tenay is on guest commentary. Tenay is really best when used sparingly as a third or fourth man to add some knowledge, like here. As an individual play-by-play, we all know he sucks ass. Also love how much Dusty respected Tenay's opinion. Heenan does a fantastic job putting the Cruiserweight title over, saying that one belt is more important to Malenko than the eight of Dragon. Lots of mat wrestling. Sonny Onoo is such a stereotype. Love Dusty ragging on Schiavone for not properly calling a half crab. Nasty slam on the floor to Malenko, very nice splat. Dragon fakes a plancha before connecting with a short tope. Malenko almost botches a release German but recovers very nicely. Malenko follows up with a spinning kneebar which he keeps in a bit long. Great pop for the powerslam by Malenko. Announcers doing great job of selling how much they want the title to stay in WCW. Massive tombstone by Malenko only gets a two. Somewhere, Undertaker felt the urge to tape his fists but he has no idea why. Malenko makes a mistake by going for a pin from the Tigerbomb rather than the Cloverleaf. Thanks to SD! 2, I know that the Tigerbomb proceeds the cloverleaf. Botched crossbody over the top rope. Dragon makes it up with the Asai moonsault which makes Tenay jizz his pants. Dragon misses a moonsault and hurts his knee, prompting Malenko to lock in the cloverleaf but Onoo causes a distraction. Near-fall with a Dragon small package. Malenko follows with a beautiful brainbuster for 2. Great stream of counters into the Tiger suplex by Dragon gets the win, making Dragon a nontuple champion. Tenay calls it "almost a Tiger suplex" when it was exactly a Tiger suplex. Fantastic match, very glad to see it.
WCW WOMEN'S TITLE TOURNAMENT FINALS - Akira Hokuto w/Kensuke Sasaki & Sonny Onoo vs Madusa
Lee Marshall on guest commentary now, straight in with a Weasel joke. Vicious hairmares by Hokuto, look amazing. Marshall mentions that Sasaki and Hokuto are married. Hanging cobra clutch on the ropes which takes the ref ages to notice. Madusa bounces back with a Stratusphere headscissors but Hokuto does a nasty choke on the ropes in response. Sharpshooter/Scorpion Deathlock by Hokuto is no-sold by the announcers. Love Dusty's response to Hokuto biting the foot. Marshall does not work as well as a fourth man like Tenay. Don't think he's as used to it as Tenay is. Very sloppy DDT by Madusa but Hokuto makes it up with a beautiful bridging German. Absolutely shit tornado DDT by Madusa who lands on her feet first. Schiavone calls it a bulldog. Looks like a botched powerbomb by Madusa but she hits a very nice German herself. Nasty-ass dropkick by Madusa sends Hokuto out. Sasaki distracts the ref while Onoo hits Madusa with a flag. Madusa awfully sells for a few seconds before a missile dropkick and the Northern Lights Bomb by Hokuto wins it to become the only WCW Women's Champion. First time I've seen Hokuto who did a great job. Madusa was sloppy as hell.
BACKSTAGE INTERVIEW - Mean Gene with Roddy Piper
Piper looks so bloated. Big roid belly. Piper calls Hogan 6'7. Hogan wishes he was 6'7. Piper does a great coked-up promo but rambles on a bit too long.
CRUISERWEIGHT MATCH - Jushin Liger vs Rey Mysterio (f***ING YES! THIS SHOULD BE AWESOME!)
Tenay's back. I didn't realise how many WCW vs New Japan matches were on this card. Matches like these is why WCW had the best cruiserweight division of any American company and that can not be disputed. Sick powerbomb from Liger who doesn't go for a pin. Rey gets his shit in, ending with his 619 fakeout. Rey takes a sick bump on a suplex to the outside. Liger then follows it up with a powerbomb on the outside, which doesn't end the match which is poor psychology in my opinion. Liger's finisher is the powerbomb so why wouldn't one on the floor get a countout? Why wouldn't Liger roll him in for a pin? Rey tries his best to confuse everyone in his reaction to the Mexican surfboard. Short German followed up by a standing moonsault by Rey. This is followed by a very safe DDT and an Arabian moonsault. Springboard dropkick by Rey who very nearly loses his balance. Rey then springboards into a Liger dropkick. Throwing release German followed by a deep half crab. No news on whether Rey needed surgery in his LEFT KNEEEEEE. Dusty marks out for the name of the Dragon Screw. Amazing Asai moonsault by Rey, makes Ultimo's look like shit in comparison. Springboard guillotine fameasser by Rey causes Liger to get a ropebreak. Schiavone calls a double leg a powerbomb. Rey misses a springboard senton (bumped very low on his back) and Liger hits a diving headbutt for two. Liger blocks the springboard frankensteiner and catches Rey with a koppou kick. Liger follows it up with the Ligerbomb for 3. Great match but inferior to the fantastic Ultimo/Malenko match. Crowd was a bit burnt out on the cruiserweights at this point.
NO-DQ MATCH - Chris Benoit (w/ Woman) vs Jeff Jarrett
May be a bit hard for people to watch with Benoit and Woman onscreen together. While I'm glad for its inclusion for the sake of completion, I understand entirely if you decide to hit the fast-forward button. While I'm not squeamish about Benoit, even I'm made uneasy about Nancy's presence in this match. Inappropriate comment: Woman had an absolutely fantastic arse. Baby had back. Oh Jesus, that music of Jeff's. Brawling to start things off. Everything Benoit did was so intense and physical, even the way he bumps off a drop toe hold. Nancy throws Benoit out the way so Jarrett gets crotched on the ropes. Very dull match so far, the two have no chemistry. Benoit uses the ropes to cheat on a sleeper. Jarrett eventually counters with a fantastic back suplex. Very blatant Flying Nothing by Jarrett leads to him eating the boots. I hate that spot so much. Match has picked up. Nice belly to belly by Jarrett. Jarrett uses Benoit's front suplex on the ropes. Nancy does a great job of sounding concerned. Jarrett goes for a figure-four but Nancy gets in and rakes his eyes. Arn Anderson walks down to the ring and quite clearly ignores Benoit to hint at dissention in the Horsemen. I smell a swerve. Hugh Morrus and Konnan grab Nancy, who kicks Morrus low much to Dusty's delight. Sullivan hits Benoit with a nasty wooden chair (smashing it right on the back of his head, so stupid) and Arn DDTs Jeff. Arn rolls Jeff back in, who lands on top of Benoit. Jarrett ends up getting a three-count. Mean Gene tries to get an interview with Arn but his mic is briefly broken and Arn ignores him. Jarrett and Benoit also ignore Gene. Out comes Mongo and Debra! Of all the people to interview, Mongo! Yes! Mongo screams HOOK EM UP for some reason and says that he's going to give me a bus ticket and apple. That's awfully nice of him. Debra breaks kayfabe by accident and calls Woman Nancy. Debra talks shit for a while before they go away. Decent but could have been better.
STING VIDEO PACKAGE.
WCW TAG TITLE MATCH - The Outsiders (c) (w/Syxx) vs The Faces of Fear (w/Jimmy Hart)
This match is going to suck ass is my prediction. Not that I'd ever say it to his face, Meng is very bloated. Roids? Nice diving bulldog by Hall just pisses Meng off. Nash tried a double nogginknocker but everyone knows you can't hurt an Islander's head. I'm surprised it didn't cause a black hole, to be honest. Barbarian misses a very shitty elbow drop. Barbarian knocks down Hall with a boot. Nick Patrick counts extremely slow on the pin as the commentators deride Patrick for being crooked. Very nice piledriver from Meng which Hall oversells. 2 count. Barbarian with a sloppy powerbomb for two on Hall. Nick Patrick refuses to acknowledge that Hall started to pass out from a nerve hold, much to the ire of the commentators. Meng breaks up a pin with an elbow drop and nearly breaks Barbarian's leg in the process. Barbarian tries a loaded big boot but takes a jackknife powerbomb instead for a three count. Barbarian does not bump properly at all, landing very heavy on his right elbow. Outsiders retain much to the delight of the fans because who the f*** are going to cheer the Faces of Fear here? Not as bad as I was expecting but certainly not good.
BACKSTAGE SEGMENT - Ted DiBiase, Vincent, Elizabeth and Hulk Hogan.
Hogan calls DiBiase Trillionare Ted and complains that people are on Pacific time. Hogan talks a lot but really doesn't say anything. Hogan calls Piper a sucka. Now I think we know why Booker called him a n*****.
VACANT WCW UNITED STATES TITLE MATCH - DDP vs Eddie Guerrero
As much as I hear it, I can't abide this dubbed theme in place of Self High Five. It just isn't right. Commentary, ring introduction and commentary couldn't be saved in the dub (or they were too lazy). Giant still has the physical U.S. title belt but is not the champion, although he would be in Smackdown 2 for the PS1. I've referenced that game twice now. Dusty: If he were to catch him in the froggy splash with the Diamond Cutter, he'd be a squashed frog! Nice plancha by Eddie. Sadly, there is zero heat for this match. Dusty's trying his hardest on commentary. Neutralizer-style kneeling piledriver by DDP. DDP grabs the ropes while applying an ab stretch. No-one cares. Heenan does a great job on colour commentary explaining which ropes are the best to pull. DDP hits a swinging neckbreaker when he could have hit the cutter instead. Heenan even yells for the cutter but realises his mistake. Heenan's really turning up the quality of his commentary. Sadly, still very little heat. Single leg by Eddie dumps DDP right on his head. Fans make a little noise from the European uppercut. Eddie gets booed when signalling for the frogsplash. DDP barely rolls away and ends up taking both of Eddie's knees in his back. DDP hits a shitty version of a Jackhammer for two. Close call when Eddie counters the cutter into a backslide. Massive spiral bomb by DDP only gets two. Eddie falls outside when both men clunk heads. The Outsiders & Syxx run in while the ref checks on Eddie. Hall hits a very awkward Razor's Edge on DDP. Eddie takes advantage and hits the frogsplash for 3 to start his first reign as US Champion. The nWo run in to attack Eddie now, who lowblows all of them and puts up a great fight before ultimately getting taken down by a short arm clothesline from Nash. Syxx steals the US title as the nWo leave. Shit match but Eddie looks very courageous at the end there, putting up a great show against the nWo.
OH JESUS - The Giant vs Lex Luger
Giant needs a decent night's sleep. Luger has his awesome Slammer theme. Schiavone says that this is the most important match in Luger's career. Bigger than him winning the title at GAB 91? How about his loss to Sting at Superbrawl II? Or how about having a WWF title match at Summerslam and Wrestlemania? Shut up, Schiavone. Enormous clothesline and elbow drop by Giant, who runs the ropes with his side rather than his back, which is a great way to break a rib. Luger tries to pick Giant up but gets crushed. Giant gets up like a dummy which makes Heenan scream. Headbutt to the dick by Giant but the ref ignores it. Don't hit blatant low blows when the ref's alert, idiots. Giant tries a charging splash but gets hung up in the ropes. Luger charges in but eats a boot. Giant misses a dropkick and gets hung up in the ropes again. Impressive agility. Luger has the Giant rocked and eventually gets him down with a neckbreaker for a two count. Giant throws Luger onto the ref. Luger slams Giant but it means nothing. Fans boo when they notice Nick Patrick. Luger racks Giant but Patrick kicks his knee out. Sting starts walking out while Luger disposes of Patrick and gets Giant in the rack again but Syxx runs in and kicks Luger. Sting gets rid of Patrick. Sting whispers into both men's ears and leaves his bat in the middle of the ring, setting up a race. Luger gets caught on his knees but low blows Giant and waffles him with the bat to get a laboured three count from referee Mark Curtis. The commentators talk about how minimal the nWo help was while Giant looks pissed. Bad match but everyone was over.
MAIN EVENT GRUDGE MATCH OF THE CENTURY BAIT AND SWITCH BULLSHIT - Roddy Piper vs WCW Champion Hulk Hogan in an non-title affair that was originally a title match but it got changed last minute.
Hogan comes out first. Buffer is such a shit wrestling announcer. His laboured introductions just don't work over theme music. I still love it when they say Piper's from Scotland. If Hogan is Americana, Piper is Canadiana. Knowing what happens, I'd be so mad if I was watching back in 1996. However, I'd also be 5. Hogan slaps Piper a couple of times to frustate him. And me. Piper holds a headlock forever. God, this sucks. Eye and back rakes outside by Hogan. Oh shit, there's 15 minutes left. Piper with the Ghetto Blaster! And he didn't even have to be half-blackface. Piper whips Hogan with a belt. I've pretty much got this in the background now, it's embarrasing to watch. This is absolute garbage. Piper gouges the eyes. Suplex by Piper gets two. Oh God, eight minutes left. Hogan misses the leg and Piper starts hopping around. Piper starts hitting the worst thigh kicks I've ever seen. Giant comes in and gets Piper up for a chokeslam forever. Delay is caused by Hogan having to kick an intruding fan's head in. Hogan eventually wanders back and gets kicked by a suspended Piper. Piper bites Giant and dumps him out. Hogan comes over and gets caught in the sleeper. Zero heat for the sleeper, which beats Hogan when his arm drops a third time. Pyro and ballyhoo ensues. The Outsiders run down but Piper fights them off and departs. Dusty gets confused and thinks Piper's the WCW Champion, much like the fans. Piper hugs his kid on the ramp as the Giant walks away from the nWo. On the ramp, Giant squares up to the rest of the nWo as Hogan admonishes him. Hogan screams for Vincent to get the title. Hogan spits in the camera. Disgusting. Absolutely shite match. One of the worst I've possibly ever seen.
Good PPV with a few dark spots here and there. Typical of a WCW pay-per-view, really.

Some thoughts on Starrcade:
The Ultimo Dragon/Dean Malenko opener was fantastic. Only complait I have is that get may have gone overboard with the nearfalls. When they started, the crowd was on their feet practically jumping up and down. The reaction cooled off a bit by then, but still a must see match.
Akira Hokuto was real good in the women's title match, lots of cool offense. Madusa dragged it down by being not so good, but it was still kind of fun despite the clunky spots. I had completely forgotten WCW had a women's title.
Liger and Mysterio, although good, wasn't as good as the opener and wasn't as good as I expected. I guess my expectations were too high. There was also the very awkward commentary moment where Dusty talks about Liger putting on weight and throws it to Heenan to comment on it. But Heenan evidently wasn't listening, or didn't care, so the toe just end up bickering at each other.
Benoit and Jarrett was alright, nothing special. I wasn't too annoyed by the interference here, but it gets worse as it continues.
Outsiders vs. Faces of Fear seems like a match designed to get the Outsiders cheered. Not much of a match at all.
DDP and Guerrero was another decent but nothing special match. And we get even more interference!
Luger and Giant isn't good. By this point I was annoyed with all the junk going on. This match not only had run ins but the heel ref Nick Patrick. I guess the Sting thing was a good mystery at the time, but at this point there were too many run ins going on.
Kind of amazing how into Piper the crowd was. Another commentary moment: Tony says that there are NWO fans chanting Piper's name, and Dusty IMMEDIATELY says the same thing and then realizes he just repeated Tony. Match itself is garbage, and contains several minutes of Pipe punching Hogan until Hogan rolls to the floor. The finish is awful. Giant comes down and holds up Piper up in a chokeslam. Now what was supposed to happen was Hogan gets kicked by Piper while being held by the Giant and then he escapes. But since a fan runs in the ring, Hogan takes the guy out while Giant has to stand there and hold Piper forever. Piper winning but it being non-title is so cheap too. Weak.
This is kind of typical of a lot of WCW PPVs: off to a great start, and then slowly gets more terrible. And being mired in tons of run ins was typical too.

Good main event and great mid-card mostly. That Luger vs. Giant match did such and the tag title match was well, generic as was Benoit vs. Jarrett.

Just finished watching this one. I didn't take notes this time though to make things a little easier. So this is all off the top of my head.
Ultimo vs Malenko: Probably the best match of the night if you ask me. Granted I have no idea why Sonny Onoo was involved, but I guess they wanted to give Dean an excuse for when he lost. Definitely don't regret watching this one.
Akira Hokuto vs Madusa: This was a total mismatch. Akira had on some rather bizarre mask thing with what looked like an oxygen mask attached to it. I don't know why. Oh, and Kensuke Sasaki is there too... along with Sonny again. Madusa dragged this one down pretty bad, including doing one of the worst Tornado DDT's I think I've ever seen. Thankfully this one was relatively short. The right woman won here.
Rey Mysterio Jr vs Jushin Thunder Liger: I liked this match, but it seemed a step behind the opener. Also interesting that the Japan talents swept the WCW people. I guess it made sense seeing that Liger and Ultimo were set to square off in a few weeks as it is. Still an interesting encounter. This match also featured a fascinating conversation between Dusty, Tenay, and Heenan when Liger, I think, hit a dragon screw leg whip, which Dusty couldn't believe was an actual move name for whatever reason. Dusty was something else on commentary, that's for sure.
Chris Benoit vs Jeff Jarrett: Talk about a weird match up. Jarrett was I guess the babyface since they were in his hometown of Nashville. Not the worst match I've seen, but nothing special really. The finish was pretty absurd. Arn Anderson DDTed Jarrett on the outside while Kevin Sullivan hit Benoit in the back with a wooden chair, thus causing Jarrett to get the pin. I guess Anderson doesn't have very good hearing considering he missed that whole thing. Oh, and Konnan was apparently part of the Dungeon of Doom at one point because he and Hugh Morrus made a cameo trying to abduct Woman, who was also there. I guess the finish made sense, but the execution seemed a little lacking to me.
We also got a Steve Mongo McMichael cameo afterward where he was with some beauty pageant winner? I don't know who she was. Not much to it really. They just came out to insult the fans and then left. Okay then.
Faces of Fear versus The Outsiders: This was a clunky match. It didn't help that evil referee Nick Patrick was involved. The Faces of Fear kept hesitating way too much to cover the Outsiders. It seemed like they had a reason for doing it, but I couldn't figure out why. Anyway Outsiders won pretty much clean. I'm guessing the Dungeon of Doom was on it's way out at this point. I will say at least this finish made some sense to set up what happened later in the night.
Eddie Guerrero vs DDP: Probably the second best match of the card. May have been a contender for the top spot in not for the ending. A particular highlight was DDP abusing the ropes during a prolonged Abdominal stretch, taking great glee in the fact he was cheating. Eddie and DDP essentially had a pretty good match until the NWO showed up to wreak havoc. First they lay out DDP which allows Eddie to win. Then they lay out Eddie and steal the belt. So basically this whole tournament ended up being a total waste of time, it seems. Not a fan of this ending, but I guess it made sense.
Lex Luger vs The Giant: The Giant was definitely pretty agile in this match, which is more than you can say for Luger. Not much to it until the finish where Nick Patrick interfered AGAIN and almost cost Luger the match. Syxx also showed up and then ran off after interfering. Then Sting came in from the crowd, whispered something to Luger and Giant, and then left his bat in the ring before vanishing off to who knows where. This allowed Luger to pick up the supposed first win of WCW versus the NWO. Match wasn't that great, but at least it kind of had a purpose.
Hollywood Hogan vs Roddy Piper: Lots of punches and kicks in this one. Eventually the Giant showed up to try and interfere, but a fan decided to interfere for whatever stupid reason, I guess to try and save Roddy? Anyway Roddy fought free and then locked in the sleeper to put Hogan down and out. Afterwards he celebrated like he'd just won the belt, except apparently it was a non-title match. Why? You would think on their biggest show of the year the main event would at least be for the belt. And then Hogan spit into the camera.
Yeah, I can definitely see how WCW eventually went downhill. Still this was far better than the last WCW pay per view I watched. Not one that I'll ever watch again most likely, but it was an interesting experience.

Storyline wise, it makes sense that Piper would have a non-title match, as he seemingly came back just to defeat Hogan, and was not interested in a full time run. Then, he beats Hogan and the nWo beats him up again, and it changes his mind.
This would have worked a lot better if they had made it clear Piper didn't actually have a title match.

While waiting for the result of the poll, I watched Massacre on 34th Street.
It was okay. The tag title match put me to sleep, literally.

Ok, just started watching Starrcade. I will provide just some random thoughts while I watch it.
For Starrcade being the "WrestleMania of WCW" the intro, the video package, the set up of the PPV doesn't add up at all. On about the same level as a WWE In Your House PPV.
We look back and its no wonder why WWE became so much bigger

Ultimo and Malenko, what a hot match to start the PPV. Its amazing what two guys who safely use risky moves are able to do. A lot of those moves WWE wouldn't let wrestlers use anymore. Dragon wins the title, first thing WCW does? Cuts away from the ring doesn't even show Dragon really getting presented the belt.
A real shame WWE didn't use Malenko better as a wrestler.
Women's match used as a filler on their PPV? come on WCW. I swear Madusa was on a ton of PPVs in the 90s. The other girl in this match screams like the villain on Power Rangers.
