Watching Dexter for the first time and loved season 1. It was fast-paced, exciting, stuff happening in each episode fun to watch and had some nice twists and turns even after reading the books.
But season 2... I'm just about to start on episode 7 and so far, it's been a bit of a chore to get through. Very slow paced, little happening in each episode, no distinct villain or plotline beyond the hunt for the Bay Harbour Butcher (which is moving along at a snails pace) the very dull subplot with the love triangle between Dexter, Lila and Rita. There's also less of a focus on guys like Batista who I think is a great character.
On the plus side, the FBI guy is a very cool and I do like the subplot with Doakes.
So does it get better? Because I'm honestly close to quitting I'm finding this season so dull. It's the love triangle which is the worst part for me. I just can not stand Lila and hate every moment she's on screen which unfortunately, seems to be a good chunk of each episode.

This is just my opinion, but aside from a stellar season 4, I think it gets a lot worse. Seasons 3, 5, 6, 7, and 8 did nothing for me, but I kept watching because I really enjoyed 1, 2, and 4.

I tapped out after a few episodes of season 2 back in the day. Season 1 was tremendous though.

Just get to Season 4. Finish that and ignore everything after.

Here's how I'd rate each season
1 - Great 2 - A bit of a step down from 1 but still good 3 - Awful 4 - Best season, imo 5 - From just okay to decent 6 - Boring and predictable 7 - Very, very good. 8 - Just terrible, second worst season behind 3

2 is good in my eyes, but its hurt by a lousy ending. That finale is one of the worst in the series. A sign of things to come for Dexter finales aside from 4.
You'll probably feel the same way about Season 3, but its worth watching for Miguel alone.
4 is great
5 is awful
6 is decent, but lost potential.
7 is different, I liked it because of that.
8 is where you question what you've been doing with your life.

I quite enjoyed season 2 all the way through so I'd say yes
I do agree with the others that you should probably stop at season 4. I mean 5 & 6 are alright and 7 & 8 are meh. Plus season 3 had Jimmy Smits so that's why I don't write that off

I feel strongly that the final season (and especially the final episode) were not good. I did enjoy the first few seasons. I might stop before the final season or maybe even the season before that.

Gave up during season 6. I watched that far cos my wife liked it. I always felt there was nobody I rooted for or liked. All the main characters are either shitty human beings or morons.

Season 1: Awesome Season 2: Not as great but still good, especially for Doakes and Lundy Season 3: Kinda average but has its moments Season 4: Fantastic Season 5: *snore* Season 6: Started with potential but just lost steam Season 7: Started out really strong and was great until about halfway through. After episode 9 it just kinda fell apart. Season 8: Haven't watched it yet.

Sounds like I'll stick with the show until season 4 since so far, everything has been positive about it.
Just finished watching episode 8 and I did enjoy that episode because things actually happened and progressed. Ludny's investigation is closing in on Dexter, Doakes discovered the slides, Lila has been revealed to be a dangerous bitch... good episode.
Hope the rest of the season continues in the same vein, now it seems that at last the shitty love triangle is over with, as is the dull as dishwater scenes of Deb with the boyfriend from the gym.

Season 1: Amazing Season 2: Amazing. I loved the whole FBI coming close to catching Dexter. Season 3: Good. Not as great as Season 2 but it was good. Season 4: Absolute masterpiece. Dexter at its peak creatively, atmospheric, acting, and writing wise in my opinion. Season 5: Ugh. Season 6: I liked it based off the whole concept with the religion aspect. Season 7: Haven't watched it. Season 8: Haven't watched it. Heard it was horrible.
So yeah just stop at Season 4. The show becomes really inconsistent after that.

Finish season 2, it gets better. Ignore season 3 entirely. Watch season 4 religiously because it's FANTASTIC. Then forget the show exists.

Season 1: Very good Season 2: The best the show ever got to me at least, but got completely derailed by how much of a copout the finale was Season 3: Meh, I liked Smits Season 4: Lithgow was great, but everything else kinda sucked Season 5: Meh Season 6: Incredibly awful Season 7: Great start, but once a certain character changes, it goes off the rails Season 8: Almost Heroes season 4 level bad

Absolutely loved season 1. Watched about half of season 2 and got insanely bored. I've intended to go back and watch at some point, but I've never done it. Probably never will.

I'm currently watching it with my wife for the first time, and while she is loving it I am losing interest fast. We just started season 6. I'm gonna stick it through to the end since there are only two more season, but so far I think the idea is far better than the execution.

It's a terrile show, just f***ing quit. The show teases being above mid-tier for so long, but after season five, it's just going to make you regret that you invested your time.
Truth be told, people jock season 4 for John Lithgow, but everything not Lithgow-related sucks, goes nowhere and shows that it's a show obsessed with the status quo.
The second half of season five has such incredible tension that it teases how great the show could be if they just stuck to being a killer-of-the-week b-show. Instead, they fronted like it's an HBO quality drama, despite the fact that it's far too chickenshit of a series to hit the reset button at the end of every single season to make sure nothing changes.
Don't waste your time. Watch "The Wire." Watch "Breaking Bad." Watch "Delocated." There's such better television than "Dexter" that will give you everything you want from "Dexter" without all the suckiness that comes from watching "Dexter."

Season 4: Absolute masterpiece. Dexter at its peak creatively, atmospheric, acting, and writing wise in my opinion. What? I disagree. Spoilers in the following. {Spoiler}{Spoiler} Outside of Lithgow, how is Season 4 a masterpiece? Honestly, this is the season that the show jumped the shark. Dexter killed an innocent, something that should have shattered him to his core, but instead it was forgotten within two episodes and never mentioned again. So many plot-twists were introduced that went absolutely nowhere. Granted, "Hungry Man" is a top-3 Dexter episode of all time because Wendy West is the only consistent writer who has any idea how the show is supposed to unfold, but what else (other than Julie Benz's masterful transformation of Rita into a suffocating bitch that got America to hate a rape victim mother of two) in quality to take from this season?
