I'm not talking favorites over time or multiple playthroughs, I'm talking you turning on the game or games for the first time ever. Who did you pick? My choices were:
- BULBASAUR: I could have gotten Pokemon Red (as my brother got blue) and this would have been my choice, but I was maybe a little TOO young at the time so when my mom went to Toys R Us to buy me my game and system, I got distracted and wanted a bunch of pokemon toys instead. When I eventually DID play a gen 1 game, it was Bulbasaur all the way, because even as a youngster I felt bad that he wasn't on a cover and wanted to give him some appreciation. Absolutely picked Bulbasaur for the remakes.
- TOTODILE: Got my first game, Gold, on Thanksgiving day and played it on the way to a relative's house. My older brother was that generic 90s FIRE IS KEWL kid so I went with Totodile to gain the advantage, plus, let's be honest. Totodile is the best looking of the bunch. Picked it again for the remakes and got a female one, which I thought was cool.
- MUDKIP: I don't remember when I specifically got Sapphire, but I do remember picking Mudkip specifically because I picked the water starter in the last generation. That's...it, really. I will pick Mudkip again in the remakes for the sake of remake consistency.
- PIPLUP: Again, when playing Pearl for the first time right at the beginning of a school vacation, I picked Piplup to maintain my streak of Water type starters.
- SNIVY: Broke the streak when I bought White on release date; I was just a big fan of Snivy and thought Oshawott was overly-cute garbage. HOWEVER, I did wind up picking Oshawott for White 2, because I didn't want to just pick the same starter 2 games in a row and we can all agree that Tepig was the worst of the bunch.
- FENNEKIN: Never thought I'd pick a fire starter in my life, but the motherf***er was too cute to pass up. Yes, despite passing on Oshawott for being cute, I still went with Fennekin. If and when Z comes out next year, I might give Chespin a try.

Until X/Y my first starter choice for each generation was the Grass-type for different reasons.
I picked Bulbasaur cause it was green(that's all the reason I needed back then), I picked Chikorita cause it was green and really cute, I picked Treecko because it was badass looking(note I never actually played Gen III beyond borrowing one of the games very briefly), I picked Turtwig because it's line was the most badass looking of the three, and I picked Snivy because yes I completely bought into the Smugleaf meme that stormed the internet.
I picked Froakie in Y, though, because Chespin looked sooooooo stupid(he doesn't look awesome until he becomes Chesnaught) and because Froakie turned into a damned ninja.

I usually get fire for the main game and water for the secondary. Got Froakie for X though as I was planning on getting Charmander from the Kanto starters. I'm not too good with grass types so I don't usually choose them.

I always started off with the water type, until X/Y.
I couldn't help it, Chespin is so damn cute!

I chose Bulbasaur because I really, really wanted to someday have a Venusaur.
It's important to set goals, kids.

Only played four generations, so...
Squirtle was my very first Pokémon in Pokémon Red. I love Squirtle, my favorite Pokémon, so it wasn't hard to choose.
Totodile was next because I wanted to continue the water trend and I wasn't vibing on the other ones.
Treecko, I picked him because I figured I go for a grass type this time and he reminded me of Gex.
Chimchar is a monkey... That's all I needed.

Started with Fire Charmander and Cyndaquil (although I didn't play that until heartgold)
But now for some reason my first pick is always grass type?? Treecko, Turtwig, Snivy & Chespin.
I tend not to pick water types as by default I always use Kingler in that role.

Squirtle: I believe my friend suggested I pick him.
Cyndaquil: Charmander was my fav starter in Red, so I had to pick Cyndaquil, too.
Torchic: See above. He's my least favourite of the Ruby/Sapphire starters, though.
Pinplup: Thought his final form looked badass.
Oshawott: Thought Tepig looked shit, and everybody was gonna pick Snivy.
Froakie: Was gonna pick Fennekin until I saw it's final form.

Squirtle - Because the first Pokemon game I played was Blue, so I figured I would get Squirtle since Blastoise was the mascot. Turned out Squirtle was even better than I expected, and it became my favorite starter of all generations.
Cyndaquil - There was something cute about Cyndaquil (the anime didn't help make it any less cute), and I thought going Fire this time around sounded like a good idea. Typlosion ended being the first and only Pokemon I ever reached level 100 with, so there's a lot of memories there. Eventually when I got Gold, I tried Totodile, and I absolutely loved him too. Nowadays my favorite starter from Johto is always a tie between Cyndaquil and Totodile.
Torchic - By the time Ruby/Sapphire came out, I was pretty much done with Pokemon entirely (boy did I do a 180 with that). When I did eventually play Sapphire, I thought Torchic had the most potential. Blaziken was a monster (and I don't mean of the pocket variety), but playing again, and Mudkip ended up becoming my favorite from that generation.
Turtwig - Having never picked the Grass starters during my first runs, I decided to give Turtwig a shot. While he wasn't bad, and I thought the tree on his back was an awesome touch, I quickly lost interest in him, and boxed him the moment he evolved into Torterra, something I've never done with my starters before. Chimchar/Infernape ended up becoming my favorite.
Oshawott - It was Water (Water Master Type!), and had a samurai-like theme. Why WOULDN'T I pick it?
Chespin - A Grass/Fighting starter sounded interested, plus I liked its tanky look. That, and I didn't want to pick Froakie because I knew I was already going to pick Squirtle. Froakie ended up becoming my favorite, even though I liked Chesnaught.

Bulbasaur - He was badass on the toon.
Fenekin - Never felt the need to pick up another pokemon game utnil 14 odd years later. My two roommates had the other two starters so thsi was my choice.

Let's see...
1st Generation: I believe it was Charmander I picked first. Although later I actually restarted my game and went with Squirtle instead, I believe. The reason: back then I had no idea you could actually catch other Pokemon. What a fool I was as a child. I still don't understand how I missed that.
2nd Generation: Totodile because he looked the most appealing.
3rd Generation: I don't recall being too big a fan of this generation for whatever reason. Believe I went with Treecko here.
4th Generation: I went with Piplup here. In hindsight I'm not sure why.
5th Generation: Tepig, because I actually liked the fellow, even if it was another fire/fighting type. But ah well.
6th Generation: Chespin was my first, but after accidentally erasing my data on my first game I ended up going with Fennekin on the second go.

Gen 1: Squirtle. A water turtle. To a babby KStrick, that was all I needed. My second playthrough I picked Charmander. Gen 2: Totodile. Up until Braviary, Totodile was my favorite Pokemon just for being awesom. Gen 3: Mudkip. By this point, I had grown attached to water type starters. Starting had the best stats, and since water was the only type NEEDED to get through the game (due to surf/whirlpool/dive/et al.), it just fit. Gen 4: Pinlup. I had been wanting a penguin forever, even if it wasn't ice. A water/steel combo wasn't bad at all. Gen 5: Snivy: Smugleaf. Nuf' said. Gen 6: Fenniken. A fire/psychic combo was unique (well, excluding Victini and Darumian... or whatever that stupid ape thing was called).

I chose Charmander because my friend got Squirtle. Then I chose Chikorita for some odd reason, even though I like Cynadquil way more. Then I went with Treecko for Gen 3, but I didn't like that game so I didn't get very far. I chose Chimchar for Gen 4 because I love that little guy. Went with Tepig for Gen 5 because he was the cutest starter ever and evolved into a badbutt, and Fennekin in X because he's my new favorite.

Squirtle: It's a water type, and a turtle. Those are practically my two favorite things. Treecko: I was interested the minute I saw it. Piplup: I like penguin looking things... Snivy: The shape of it was enough to sell me. It doesn't take much to sell me on a Pokemon. Froakie: What can I say? I like frogs.

Charmander, because little 8 year-old me saw a that beautiful dragon on TV and went "I want that." Although later on squirtle became my favorite. Cindaquil, because I thought fire was the best element and I evil rodent things. Although again, now that I look back tototile is probably my favorite. Mudkip, because non of the starters in Emerald looked particularly amazing to me, but with mudkip I could at least mess up that STUPID looking kung fu fire chicken. Platinum was the last game in the series I played and it probably has the best overall starter line-up. Between the king of 88000 monkeys who bears a halo of flame, the penguin praetorian guard and a cross between an ankylosaurus and a tank who is so ancient and mighty he has a tree growing from his back, I probably still couldn't choose my absolute favorite, but turtwig was the one I ran with first.

I only played up to Gold/Silver, so:
Squirtle: I've always liked turtles, so this was an easy choice for me
Cyndaquil: I liked how it looked compared to the others, plus I wanted to do a Fire starter this time around over a Water starter

Squirtle supremacy all the way. I tore through Brock's gym like a hot knife through butter.

Squirtle is my homie.
Going through there and picking the actual starters I picked upon first run throughs of all these games lead me to the harsh realization that I picked the water starter in every game except for when I choose Treecko over Mudkip. Although to be fair, I only picked Oshawott over Tepig because my amigo I played Pokémon with already chose Tepig and I didn't want to double up.
I guess in general I just like the look of the water starters better.
