First Round Recap:
The First Round of the King of the Ring Tournament started off with The Magnificent Muraco facing The Junkyard Dog in a wild brawl. When Muraco's reverse piledriver failed to put the Dog down he grabbed JYD's chain and attempted to choke him out. But not only was the Dog able to wrestle the chain away but the ref disqualified him as well.
Our next match featured two lesser known wrestlers as Les Thornton battled Steve Lombardi. The technically sound Englishman dominated the brawler from Brooklyn but Lombardi tripped Thornton and with a little help from his feet on the ropes, pinned Thornton for the upset victory.
Our next two participants were certainly familiar with each other as Paul Orndorff and "Cowboy" Bob Orton had been feuding for months. That familiarity would help Orndorff as he grabbed Orton's cast in the opening minutes and threw it into the crowd. Unwilling to fight without it, Orton ran back to the dressingroom.
Our next match was a battle of two longtime veterens as Pedro Morales defeated Johnny V with the Boston Crab.
Terry Funk looked to be in trouble when Tito Santana hit him with his Flying Forearm but the blow knocked Funk out of the ring. As Tito went out to get him, Funk pulled somthing out of his tights and hit Tito in the throat. As Santana gasped for air Funk rolled back into the ring for the win.
Our next bout matched the speed of "Jumping" Jim Brunzell against the power of the Spoiler. The end came when the Spoiler went for his trademarked Arm twist ropewalk chop only for Brunzell to yank him off the ropes. Brunzell then hit the dropkick for the victory.
Two of wrestling's best were up next as Ricky Steamboat met Greg Valentine. Valentine tried to finish off Steamboat with the Figure-Four but Steamboat kicked him into the corner. The Dragon then went to the top and hit the Flying Bodypress for the pin.
Our final first round match saw The Iron Sheik dominate B. Brian Blair before finishing him off with the Camel Clutch. He refused to release the hold vowing to "make Blair humble" (come on, you knew that was coming) but Jim Brunzell chased Sheik out of the ring to save his partner.
So our Quarterfinals are set. Who's moving on to the semis? It's time to vote.
