Well last night on Legend's House, Pat Patterson came out of the closet for the first time in 50 years. Which would be pretty big if not for the fact that everyone already knew this. But does it compare to Triple H and Stephanie's real life marriage that was never acknowledged until 2009?

Wait...
He's gay?
What's next? Is he going to tell us he didn't win the IC title at a tournament in Rio?

So yeah I just saw the segment on TMZ and I find it so impossible that none of these dudes, people he's been friends with for decades, didn't already know about his sexuality. Reality TV is terrible.

I didn't really "know" he was gay. It was just something that I accepted as fact because everyone said so.

I know for a fact I remember reading an interview in Entertaiment Weekly(I think?) with The Rock many years ago when Be Cool was coming out and he said directly that Pat Patterson was gay and that he based some of his character traits on him, so i wasn't a rumor thing, it was a known thing. Also Sherri said it multiple times in her Hall of Fame induction speech. Although, I know that Legends House wasn't originally supposed to be on WWE Network, so I guess it was supposed to be a surprise to non wrestling fans. Maybe it is he first time he has ever acknowledged it, but I don't think that's the case

Mean Gene knew, he flat out said in the show that he'd met Patterson's partner and been friends with them both. I wrote a blog post on it after the fact and I think it's less that he was coming out, and more that he's SURVIVED 50+ years of the Pro Wrestling Business (or Dis Bizniss if you'd prefer) as a semi-closeted gay man, in both an industry and a time not known for progressive views on the subject or tolerance thereof.

Wrestling is strange as at times it can be quite progressive even while using outdated stereoytpes to play to people's prejudices, often doing both at the same time. Despite how wrestling fans can be stereotyped I don't think there has been much homophobia directed towards Pat or Darren Young and judging from interviews not much within the industry over the past 15 years or so. Same goes for popular fan-favourite black wrestlers in an age where many were at least casually racist.

Just noticed on Yahoo that its one of the higher searched stories.
For "insiders" like us, Pat Patterson coming out is shocking, but not really for casual audiences.
Stephanie and Triple H was a little more obvious, even for casuals. Most casual viewers these days probably don't even know much about Pat to begin with.

Jim Ross: "and coming from the back is Pat Patterson, he does the rear end jobs at the briscoe brothers shop". Nowadays the E can't get away with that.

I've actually met someone who didn't know Steph and Haitch were legit married until the Summer of Punk. I've never met anyone who didn't know Patterson was gay.

I liked how none of the Legends expressed any sort of surprise. The general reaction was like "Good for you, Pat. It's about time."
