Shit getting more and more expensive, literally $1.25 for some skittles. How do you budget your monthly/weekly grocery haul FAN? Grow your food? Food stamps? Yogi bear style? Between me and my roomate we spend about $175 every 2 weeks on goods, but we tend to eat out fairly often.

I grow my own tomatoes an peppers in my back yard and I'll never quit doing it. Cheap, easy and tasty.
Being in Iowa I have immediate access to knowing people I can buy meat directly from. About once a year I'll buy an entire hog and send it to the locker. Total cost on a 300lb pig runs me about $500. That includes the cost of bacon/sausage/chops/old fashioned frankfurters and whatever else... it's fairly cheap considering you are getting rather high end product.
I do the same with a quarter of beef. The processing on the beef is super cheap (like 10 cents a pound) because all I do is steaks and couple roasts and the rest hamburger in 1lb packs. The reason I don't have a price on the beef is because it fluctuates wildly. Crazy how in a weeks time the price will change 20% up and down.
I cook a lot for guests so no, my wife and I don't eat like a thousand pounds of meat a year. But I probably cook that much.
So about 7-8 months of the year my food bills are pretty small. Typical meal is pork/beef/fish i caught, something from the garden and a starch (rice/noodle/bread). Winter is more expensive because I get stuck buying produce. I can't eat canned/frozen all winter.

I prefer the European method, and just go when I need something. Anywhere from $5-$30.

Well, if I'm at home with my parents, as I am at the moment, It all gets taken care of for me, so I really can't complain. Otherwise, with all the various 3 for the price of 2 etc deals, I can usually get enough for dinner and lunch for a week for £20. Student thriftiness FTW.
