There are thousands of break-up songs...but only "Passenger Pigeons" by The Handsome Family uses mass extinction as a metaphor.

"The Dance" and "If Tomorrow Never Comes", both by Garth Brooks, never fail to make a mess out of me.

"Where Did You Sleep Last Night?" on Nirvana Unplugged. You can hear the pain in Kurt's voice.
Also, a second nomination for "Daddy" by Korn.
And on a personal note, "When I Get Where I'm Going" by Brad Paisley and Dolly Parton, because it was used in a video for my grandmother at her funeral. I should add "the Dance" by Garth Brooks because I always associate it with being performed at the NASCAR banquet during a video tribute to Dale Earnhardt in 2001.

Now....It's not Easy Being Green, is not a real sad song. But the version sung by Big Bird at Jim Henson's memorial....oh God.

Ode to Billy Joe by Bobbie Gentry and Memphis, Tennessee by Chuck Berry make me cry like a little girl every time I hear them.

My second job involves being a church musician, and often I get called in to play organ and sing at funerals. It honestly doesn't bug me that much (pay's good, which doesn't hurt), since I like to think that by performing well I'm helping a family through a tough time.
That said, one of the tunes I sing is slightly adapted from the last song Jean Valjean sings before the end of Les Miserables, the melody that's the musical setting for songs like Eponine's "On My Own", as well. Took me a number of times singing that before I could stop at least one eye from tearing up, because even as a grown man that song makes me blubber like a baby during the closing scenes.

the music at the end of the Incredible Hulk TV series from the 70's/80's is the saddest music in the world ever! and then when you see Bruce/David/whateverhewascalledthatweek walking away with his backpack! sad sad times.

Almost every song on The Final Cut by Pink Floyd. 'I held the blade in trembling hands and prepared to make a cut' from the title track. The entirety of 'When The Tigers Broke Free,' which was added in for the reissue after being released as a standalone single in 1982. 'The Gunner's Dream,' my absolute favourite Pink Floyd song, is just impossibly sad and beautiful - 'after the service when you're walking slowly to the car/and the silver in her hair shines in the cold November air/you hear the tolling bell and touch the silk in your lapel.' I'm literally tearing up thinking about it. It is just an exhaustingly sad album that is why I adore it.

Wow, I am really surprised no one has mentioned It's So Hard To Say Goodbye To Yesterday by Boyz II Men. That shit does not stop being sad even after all those years.

Wow, I am really surprised no one has mentioned It's So Hard To Say Goodbye To Yesterday by Boyz II Men. That shit does not stop being sad even after all those years. I always think of the teenage boy's funeral from Lethal Weapon 3 when I hear it. Such a sad scene in such a funny movie. As for my pick, Whatsername by Green Day. I remember the first time I couldn't remember my ex-girlfriend's name for a moment when I was reminiscing of the good times we had. It made me realize that while I had moved on and married someone else, I never wanted to forget her and what she meant to me. This song captures that feeling perfectly.

Losing You by Randy Newman:
And once I heard Newman describe the backstory of how this song came to be, it got even more depressing.
One more by Newman too, this one written about his ex-wife (after he remarried):

I got a little misty eyed during The Muppets Movie when the rest of the Muppets joined Kermit on "Rainbow Connection".
The song "Searching for A Former Clarity" by Against Me! depresses the shit out of me. Just for the opening line "No the doctors didn't tell you, that you were dying. They just collected their money, and sent you on your way."
