For me the song I picked the lyrics aren't even sad, but optimistic. It only really hits you if you know the movie though the tone of the song in the performance is also quite sad. Anyway:

These country songs make me cry violently: "Cowgirls Don't Cry" by Brooks and Dunn and Reba "Highway 20 Ride" by Zac Brown Band "Travelin' Soldier" by the Dixie Chicks "Probably Wouldn't Be This Way" by Leann Rimes "Alyssa Lies" by someone I don't remember "Three Wooden Crosses" by Randy Travis I don't understand why there's an entire genre of music created just to make me cry. In non-country music, "Let Her Go" by Passenger did a number on me after an unexpected, crushing breakup, particularly, "Staring at the bottom of a glass / hoping one day you'll make a dream last / but dreams come slow, and they go so fast." Good thing I can still drive effectively while I'm sobbing.

Johnny Cash's cover of "Hurt" by Nine Inch Nails...especially if you watch the video. Oof it's rough watching old man Cash.

All Out of Love by Air Supply. It was my maternal grandmother's favorite song, played at her funeral, and I can't hear it without crying. She's been dead for over 30 years, and I still have to leave the room when the song comes on.

"Song for My Father" by The Angels of Light. Beautiful yet utterly heartbreaking.

These are some that I associate with sadness.
Does Not Suffice - Joanna Newsom
"It does not suffice for you to say I am a sweet girl, or to say you hate to see me sad because of you. It does not suffice, to merely lie beside each other, as those who love each other do.
I picture you, rising up in the morning: stretching out on your boundless bed, beating a clear path to the shower, scouring yourself red.
The tap of hangers, swaying in the closet — unburdened hooks and empty drawers — and everywhere I tried to love you is yours again, and only yours."
In Liverpool - Suzanne Vega
"And the boy in the belfry He's crazy, he's throwing himself Down from the top of the tower Like a hunchback in heaven He's ringing the bells in the church For the last half an hour He sounds like he's missing something Or someone that he knows he can't Have now and if he isn't I certainly am"

Do NOT play "Christmas Shoes" in my presence. Ever. I bawl like a baby at that one.

Seasons in the Sun, the terry jacks version. Anytime you need to sit in a bathtub and open a couple of veins listen to that one.

Other than the obvious answers like 'Hurt' and 'Everybody Hurts' I'll go with 'I know it's over' by The Smiths. Very depressing song.

For me it begins and ends with Korn's "Daddy". That song just makes a person feel absolutely horrible after listening to Jonathan Davis have a mental/psychotic break down during the song.

Do NOT play "Christmas Shoes" in my presence. Ever. I bawl like a baby at that one. So I had somehow forgotten this song. Go ahead and toss "Flowers for Mama" in with it, and then hire a mariachi band in cleats to jump on my chest for a while.
