I was just thinking back to when I was a kid and about how krazy popular Mortal Kombat was. I mean, there were two movies, a cartoon series, a tv show, action figures... and this thing:
Yeah, most of that stuff sucked, but still.

It was huge. It even had a good-to-great movie.

OH and that movie had a pretty good novelization that I randomly read a couple of years ago because I found it in the free bin of a used book store. It has some differences from the movie, as I recall:
Sonya did not kill Kano and he remained villainous comic relief for the remainder of the story. She also fought Jade, I think.
The guy that Goro killed to prove he meant business that everybody seemed to think was pretty cool was an actual fleshed out character with a back story and stuff. His death meant a lot more in the book and was treated as a big deal.

Popular enough for the government to try and ban it.
And for obvious reasons, that's all I'll say about that.

I liked how making Fatality parodies on Newgrounds with the sprites became a "thing".

It was insanely popular. The arcades we're packed. I remember how people said that it killed street fighter, and it almost seemed that way for a short while.
And let's not forgot this classic gem.

I disagree, it's a very good game, but I think Donkey Kong is the best game ever.

Mortal Kombat was as popular as any video game has ever been.
I also ride for the first Mortal Kombat movie, which I think it's safe to say is the best video game turned movie of all time.
Quick story about the movie, two years ago I was in a long term relationship with a girl from a conservative Jewish family. Because of her upbringing, she didn't spend Friday nights in the arcade like the rest of us and had absolutely no frame of reference or knowledge of anything Mortal Kombat related. So, to share something important to me, I took her to a midnight screening of it my local theater was holding. Watching Mortal Kombat with someone completely unfamiliar with it really opens your eyes to a few things you wouldn't normally consider:
Halfway through the film, she leans over and whispers "This is a really poorly organized tournament." I said "What do you mean?" And she goes "Everyone is just hastily told who they're going to fight and eventually everyone has to fight Prince Goro. How is that a tournament?" Valid point.
Some time later after johnny Cage punching Goro in the balls, she leans over and goes "How is that legal?" I ask her, in a movie where we've seen someone frozen to a block of ice and shattered, someone decapitated with a shield, someone set a blaze and someone's soul ripped from their body, why would punching in the balls be the only thing illegal? Her response "Well, if that's legal, why isn't every single fight just two guys trying to punch each other in the balls?" Another valid point. Why hasn't anyone made that movie?
Also, from then on, she only referred to Goro as "Prince Goro" as she has a level of respect for the monarchy.

For a lot of us 90's kids, it was our first experience seeing gore in a video game, thus becoming somewhat of a holy grail.
Not saying that's the only reason for its popularity, but it certainly helped.
