I know I'm behind on the times with this one, but damn it was his Character awesome at that time or what? I've watched a couple of his matches and promos from that time period that were great. He had the crowd eating out of his hand and he played the heel/tweener to perfection. He did that heel Schtick that is so rarely done well: Very capable of winning on his own talent without taking shortcuts but usually would do so anyway.
Why has no one ever tried to do another character like this again?

Too recent. We won't really get an imitator for another half-decade or so, by which point we'll have wrestlers who always wanted to imitate Danielson's reign.

Shame that he did the shtick in ROH. Where after the first couple of months the ROHbots wanted to be "clever" and feel in on it, so they started cheering him and chanting for him like he was supposed to be the good guy.
I loved at that time period their fans legitimately calling him the Best in the World, not getting that he was meant to be taken with a grain of salt when he called himself that or taken for what it was. A cocky heel being a cocky heel.

Or maybe they just enjoyed his work and actually thought he was the Best in the World...

Bryan I wasn't a fan of as a heel, mostly because you can't really have him as a heel.
One thing I was thinking about was, it's almost like he's wrestled a more intense style in WWE then he did in ROH. In ROH, he didn't really have too many tv restrictions so a lot of the matches I saw, he could work a lot slower. I really loved his submission wrestling where he was methodically working holds and the crowds were going nuts for stuff like that. But now with the TV matches, he has to work a lot quicker matches, at least quicker then his average ROH matches, and now instead of those Japanese strong style matches, he's mastered the WWE style fiery baby face comeback, and that's where he's really hard on his body. I think when he comes back, like, they really should take advantage of those 3 hour Raws and let him wrestle that slower style. So yeah, I think it's faster and more intense due to the time limitations.

Compared to how he is in WWE, from what I've seen of his ROH run....eh.
He always had charisma going by the clips of him from other indies, but ROH were so wrapped up in pushing him as the great technical badass to where he seemed a lot blander compared to now. I don't agree with Vince (allegedly) thinking he made Bryan into a star, but the Hell No stuff really let him spread his wings again.

Eh, even if he was pushed as more of a technician, Bryan in ROH had this uncanny feel for how the crowd was reacting. He was constantly adjusting what he did, seemingly second by second, to the audience's heat.

I always felt Danielson was unfairly considered to be boring or bland during his run in ROH and on the other indies. I really think it was a case of the 2002 version of Bryan Danielson being a super plain, no showmanship, great technical wrestler, and thus he had that reputation. Around 2005 or so was when he really started to show more charisma and character, and he was then able to turn it up a few additional notches during the years that followed. Even though he had more than just the "plain tights, technical wrestler" aspect to his overall character by the end of the decade, he was still labeled by some as too plain, likely those who hadn't actually seen much of his character progression over the years.

Yeah Bryan really seemed to discover his character and charisma in '05. And as someone said earlier he had some weird control over the crowd that few have. Especially in ROH where the fans are even harder to control. I remember him and Nigel exchanging headlocks so much at the start of one of their matches that they actually had the crowd chanting "Headlock!" and cheering when it was applied. Bryan was on top of his game back then. Not that he isn't great now, I just don't feel he is as good as he was.

God I loved his title run. I remember when he got signed and people were like "Great wrestler, no charisma." and I was just like "Just you wait." because I'd seen how much of a fantastic jerk and a fired up hero he could be.

Yes, it was awesome. I really miss the Cattle Mutilation and how he could flip into it and then back out of it. And I miss, "I have till five, referee!"
I would guess Vince doesn't like Cattle Mutilation because the faces of the wrestlers are obscured during it. Still, I thought it was really cool to watch him flip into it.
Not to shill too much, but if you've just seen a couple of his matches and liked them, you may want to order one or more of the Bryan Danielson compilations from ROH. They've got the complete feud with Nigel McGuinness. They have one called 'American Dragon' and one called Bryan Danielson: World Champion.

I don't so much miss Cattle Mutilation because, although the name was cool as f***, I never really cared for the move so much. I do miss "I have 'till FIVE!" though. He used it once (I think against Sheamus in their 2/3 Falls Match) and I marked out very hard. Wish he'd start using it regularly again (preferably when he turns heel so he can get good heat for it at first before it inevitably becomes a fan favourite chant). And yes, anyone who likes good, technical wrestling should get the Nigel/Bryan Complete Collection. One of my favourite wrestling DVDs ever. Their matches at worst are decent and at best my favourite match of all-time (Unified).
