I'm not really a fan of the series so I don't really know anything about it. So I was wondering if someone here could clear something up for me. I was told that originally Godzilla was a giant ape. I asked if he was thinking of King Kong but he swore that the first ever Godzilla story had him depicted as a giant gorilla. Is this true?

He may be thinking of the name Gojira and its translation. The name is a combo of whale/gorilla.

When the original Gojira was being developed several ideas were considered to what Godzilla would look like.. Other then giant ape, was a giant octopus, or some weird monster with a mushroom shaped head. But fortunately they decided on giant mutant dinosaur based on a combination of a tyrannosaur, iguanodon and stegosaurus.. And the rest is history.

There was a giant ape monster movie that was made in Japan(a lost film) that actually predates Godzilla(James Rolfe/AVGN even talked about it). Although I'm sure that's not what your friend is referring to.
