Repo! The Genetic Opera... Seriously, how does anyone watch this awful hunk of celluloid garbage and think it's good?
I have 2 really good friends who LOVE this shit, and they are making me sit through it... I have seen it once before and hated it, but it might be even worse than first time.
I cannot even BEGIN to fathom how anyone can think this is even remotely good. The music is awful, the lyrics are beyond stupid, and the less said about the "story", the better off we all are.
Anyone else completely loathe this terrible cinematic shit-heap?

Nope, it's a fun musical. Sure, it's no masterpiece, but it's over the top and enjoyable.

It's better after you've took a little glass vial.
A little glass vial?

I just don't see it. It comes off far too pretentious and artsy to me to be any fun. The campyness is far too steeped in the overwhelming sense of trying too hard to be a weird cult movie. And again, the music.... ugh. Barely b-grade dialog sung poorly over generic "epic" rock.
Don't get me wrong, I love a good campy, over the top movie/musical. But this movie doesn't seem to understand that in order to truly be that type of movie, it has to embrace the joke along with the audience. Not only does this film not embrace the joke, it doesn't even know there IS a joke.

If you take a look at the director's other work, he both knows he's making b-level shlock, and he enjoys it.
Beyond that, you really think any movie casting Paris Hilton and Ogre is taking itself seriously?

I see the casting of Paris Hilton as a classic case of stunt casting. Actually, this movie is a textbook example of the kind of casting movies like this always use to try to suck people into watching it: a veteran actor who is out of place, a musician, and a pop-culture icon.

Pretentious and arty are the two words I'd put as far away from Repo as possible, I mean, we could discuss how it's basically a modern less-technically astute musical genre version of Phantom of the Paradise or something similar, but if you've seen a lot of musicals, you can't apply pretentious and/or arty to REPO! of all things.
Maybe you dislike the production sheen on it, or the style of epic rock the music has, but if you want to use the casting of a famous person to get viewers as a negative (for a character who is just Paris Hilton incarnate) then the work producers and casting agents do for all films will shock you every time you watch a feature. It'd be miscast if the characters weren't basically designed around templates each of the actors/performers have filled before in life and/or other films/shows.
It's campy and a modern re-interpretation of many a late-70s musicals, you can like it for that but it's not pretentious or arty at all.
It's no Rocky Horror or Phantom of the Paradise but it's a film born of a popular stage show, it's simple to understand and despite it having a lot of attraction for younger film viewers due to the music genre used (and the target audience is the most important thing to most films of course), it's alright, and most films of this nature draft in non-actors for character roles that tend to match their real life (assumed by fans) personality.

The movie has Anthony Stewart Head (aka Giles from Buffy) singing. I can't help but love it.

I hate Repo but I hate musicals in general, so it's really hard to quantify for me. I literally can't tell it's any better or worse than any musical you name to me. The main problem I have with it is that it's basically just a bunch of intrusive, shitty songs that get in the way of the story more than they help it shouted out by shitty characters none of which have a real identifiable voice (ironically) because they all express their emotions the same way, in f***ing singing. But that's the same problem I have with every musical I've ever seen so it can't be something that is unique to Repo.

I don't trust any movie with the word "repo" in it that does not have Emilio Estevez in it.......or Barry Darsow.

I didn't enjoy it at all... I really wanted to because I'm a big Skinny Puppy/Ogre fan. He's interesting it it, I guess, but yeah, I really didn't like this movie at all.

I cannot get past the premise of repossessing custom-made organs, so why the hell would I wanna watch it?
Then again, I don't like watching movies in general. They angry up the blood.

The first time I saw it was through a former bandmate, and he mentioned as he was putting it in that Ogre was in it, which raised some curiosity (mainly because I was curious as to how he would fare vocally, as he doesn't really have a "musical" kind of voice). His charachter is basically inconsequential and unnecessary, and his vocals are just high-pitched warbling, thus rendering the 1 thing that could have made this tripe interesting a complete non-factor.

I saw it a few years ago, and from what I remember, it was middle of the road. Not terrible, but not that good either.

I love it. It's over-the-top ridiculousness with a great premise. I love the way it's shot, I love the music, the lyrics, and just pretty much everything about it.
Also, Sarah Brightman, Paul Sorvino, and Anthony Stewart Head are goddamn phenomenal.
