It seems lately that internet reviews (ie, TGWTG) seem to be getting longer and longer. For example, i've seen movie reviews on youtube that are a half hour long or even later. Then there was Linkara's 300th episode (i cant talk much about it here) which was 3 parts that were a little over 90 minutes total (it likely took less time to read the comic). And then there's Mr. Plinkett who does reviews focusing on every minute detail of the films. I miss the days of 15-20 minute reviews, or even under 10 minute reviews. I dont mind it that much if its multiple reviews (like AVGN's reviews of various systems) or a retrospective-type review about a tv show (cartoon clipshow), but does a review of a single film have to be so long? Especially if the film has a short running time as is?

Plinkett's I like in that he really does get in depth. Many of them, TGWTG included, go off on tangents and skits that are just unnecessary much of the time. They can be done well, but sometimes they really bring the review to a halt.
That's one thing I do like that Linkara changed up, putting his storyline stuff at the end of the review. I know that stuff has its fans, but since I'm not one of them, I can watch the review and then be done with it, rather than it being smack in the middle of the video.

I think once you start hitting 20-30 minutes, people have a short attention span and lose interest. Like Kevin said, it only works if it really goes in debt and not go on tangents and skits just to fill time. The thing I hate that's becoming a trend now is how many of the reviewers are making 30-60 minute reviews ad build them as this big epic even when really you can do the same review and then some in about a third of that time. I've had many times where I'll see a video anywhere that's 30+ mins and I just don't have the patience for it to watch it in one sitting. However, that's just me.

IMO, a lot of reviewers may be playing Follow The Leader behind Doug Walker. The problem is that they don't have his comedic timing or writing ability, and even he's pretty hit-or-miss with his more "epic" reviews.

Unfortunately, Doug Walker doesn't really have a lot of comedic timing or writing ability, himself. Pretty much the only reviewers I like who do weird stuff and sketches are JonTron (who is excellent at it) and AVGN (who is REALLY hit or miss with it). That's just me, though.

Yeah, if I see a review that's over 20 minutes I tend to miss it unless it's a movie I really enjoy or hate.
15-20 minutes is the right amount of time for an internet review.

I enjoy the guys at Classic Game Room, since most reviews are 3-5 minutes with the exception of Mark, who tends to go 5-8. He tends to meander and talk about the Vectrex a lot, but thats why you watch Mark! Still all reviewers give a good amount of information and tell you everything you need to know about thier game, as well as their personal opinions.
TotalBiscuit's WTF is? series is an anomaly, as its very indepth and informative, and even the longer videos typically feel justified in thier length. For those who haven't watched they're not really reviews, but first impressions where TB will show current gameplay after 5-10 hours of going through the game then give you his thoughts. One of the most trustworthy review shows I've watched, and one of the few popular guys who actually cares about PC gaming and dedicated a good portion of the review to how the game runs for PC, covering all the specs and options.

I honestly think SFDebris is a decent guide as none of his stuff feels too long or reeking of too much padding and over the top comedy stuff is largely kept to a minimum in favor of quick snark. Anything that's long is because he's typically doing interesting analysis which warrants the length.

yes. Nostalgia Critic's reviews are often way too long. Linkara's reviews just tured into self-indulgent, over-long fan-fiction where he occasionally talks about comics and Spoony takes forever to get through one thing. and I say that as a fan of all 3 of them. it's especially bad when you consider that AVGN, Cinema Snob and Oancitizen are all a lot better without usually breaking the 15-20 minute mark.

I can't speak to the second point, but to the first I agree with. Doug is really good at review/critiquing; in fact I tend to enjoy his out of character stuff more. He does have good insights, and can tell you why he feels what he feels. As NC, he can be funny when he's reacting to what's on-screen. Problems start though when he's doing his own material, as the vast majority of the time, it just falls flat.

I like the Gaming Historian quite a bit. He covers a lot of material in fairly short little reviews/retrospectives. He's a little dry, and he's mostly just conveying information rather than opinion, but it's usually interesting.

If it's too long, I just have the review play while I do something else, like play my 3DS.

Internet reviews are totally getting too long. The first such incident occurred in 2006 when... pretty much. I never got into watching a 20-30 minute long review of a movie or show. If they're talking to someone and actually dissecting it that's one thing but if they're just snarkily yelling about stuff they don't understand or didn't get or were just bad, then yeah...no.

I think TV Trash does a decent approach. No, its not everyones cup of tea, but he's able to condense tv shows into short, watchable videos. While he does focus too much on the negatives, to be fair most of what he reviews doesnt have much positives.

Agreed. When you see wrestling reviews 90 minutes long I'm like I rather watch the PPV instead. Unless it's a 90 minute TNA Impact review because who wants to see impact for 90 minutes?

Well I used to do longer reviews when I 1st started it was a rambling mess around 40 plus mins about WWE&TNA PPV's and I don't look to fondly on those videos but I still like them though. But, I got better with editing and script writing and well my video reviews are around 10-15 mins but I do go to 20 mins on rare occasions like my WM 20 review but for the most part I have about 10-15 mins of me reviewing stuff like here
