We've talked about it before on here, so with all the hullabaloo and hoopla surrounding debates about 1994 being the "best" year in hip-hop, I decided to balance out the spectrum for LA Weekly today on which year was clearly the worst. As jaded as we as rap fans are, we made it through an absolutely awful year. I'm talking 2008. I've thrown that year out before, but I had some time today to really classify why it' the worst. Check it out - www.laweekly.com/westcoastsound/2014/07/08/what-was-hip-hops-worst-year-well-tell-you

808's was easily my least favorite Kanye album. I get it was supposed to be different, but I don't think it worked at all.

I was thinking 2007 before I came in, but both years were awful, omg T-Pain was On EVERY TRACK, I got so tired of hearing "Let me buy u a drank O eeee" The market leader was someone who had no business being at the top. Weird time for hiphop.

Weird time for hiphop. As someone who marked for the "snap" craze, I enjoyed Buy U a Drank. And I think T-Pain did "gratuitous overuse of Auto-Tune/vocoder" better than anyone.

The man with the indelible talent for rhyming words with themselves.

I don't know what to think about Lil Wayne. Is he a good rapper or not? Is Lollipop a good song or not?
I think the thing is, Wayne's rap style is very different, very unconventional. He doesn't rap like any of the other 'greatest' rappers in history. Though, however you define the sounds he makes with his mouth, they sound pretty good in song form.
As for Lollipop, it doesn't really have a good melody or vocals, but somehow I can't say I hate the song, nor can I say it's a bad song. Something's preventing me from doing so.

I would say any year after 2007 with the exception of a few good albums.

I miss the super producers who could make amazing distinctive beats. Someone like Lil Jon, Mannie Fresh, Swizz Beatz or Mr. ColliPark could make you forget all about a lame artist and just get mesmerized by the track.
The closest thing we have to that now is DJ Mustard (On Tha Beat, Hoe).

I listened to a lot of bad rap from like... 2005 to 2008.
