I'm damn near 23 years old and I'm still confused by this. What in the F*** was the point of Necron showing up at the last second in Final Fantasy IX. I get that he was like the physical embodiment of nothingness, darkness or SOMETHING, and that Kuja pissed him off almost destroying everything. But then you just win and he's all like, K BYE.
Maybe the symbolism is just lost on me.

this is the best answer i can find; In Final Fantasy 20th Anniversary Ultimania — File 1: Character Book, Necron is described as, "a being awakened by Kuja's fear, despair, and hatred, which called out to it as he learned of his mortality, just as his ambitions were within reach". not much, but it's something.

Because bosses, that's why.
Some concept artist penned him/it and got the nod and that's really all the more complicated it is. I'm sure there's some half assed fever dream explanation, but this is Final Fantasy we're talking about here. They're all stupid.
You're a skirt chasing furry with secret Goku powers that steals a princess with his fake theater troupe that gets caught up in a struggle for the fate of the World with some other secret power furry. Frankly, I'd be more surprised if there wasn't a Necron.

Basically, Kuja f***ed up everything really bad, and Necron came because the balance of existence was askew, thanks to the previously mentioned androgynous asshole, and he was going to kill everything to fix it, but was stopped, so super happy fun times for all.

I was just replaying IV for like the fifth time not more than an hour ago. My only real point is that none of them make any kind of real sense if you really start microscoping them.

In particular, I love the remake on the 3DS, although the SNES version will always have a space in my heart. Of all the Playstation Era Final Fantasies, I think IX is one that would benefit the most from a remake on like the 3DS or something, but I think Square-Enix hates it. The gaming market of the time just wasn't ready for the nostalgic route that it took and I think it would be now if they did it or made another entry in the series along the same lines.

I'd be all for them going a little more "classic" with a new entry as opposed to making 13-4 Lightning Re-Returns Revengencing Reprisal Reloaded, or whatever their plans are.

I figured I'd missed something the first time I did it. Struggled for ages to beat Kuja and then have to fight that shit? Blech.

He's there to crib a Yoda quote.
Kidding aside, he is sort of out-of-nowhere, and that bugs me, but it makes sense that Kuja's desperation, along with his power he had acquired, would cause him to dun goof.
Mortality was a huge theme of FFIX, and here you fight the concept of death itself, pretty much, and the only real victory is accepting its inevitability and coming to terms with it.

He/It/Whatever was lame as crap. Yes! I've finally beaten Kuja after an epic battle, after a long quest and several retries. But he's not the end-boss! Here's Necron! Boo-yah! Which I manage to beat in the first try, with no real struggle at all... A bit like "The Tick Thing" in FFX, although you can actually lose against Necron...

It's basically death, and the whole theme of IX is death. Necron sees Kuja destroy himself and the crystal, and asumes that's what every being on Gaia seeks. So, the party engage it in battle to prove how much they want to live.

Yeah, I basically saw it as "Oh, so you mortals want death eh? Here I come baby!... Oh? You fight hard because you want life? Guess I'm not needed here anymore. Peace out!"

Since Final Fantasy IX was supposed to be a throwback to the older games in the series it's kind of understandable that they would put the true last boss right at the end similar to what they did with Chaos or the Dark Goddess from 3. But at least those two got some hints at their appearance throughout the game, whereas Necron really just showed up and said you don't know me but I'm going to kill you all now LOL!

Yeah, Final Fantasy's history is full of the surprise final boss. Interesting that two of the games that didn't do it, 6 and 7, are widely considered to be the best of the main series.

Necron itself, was more of a symbolic entity than anything really necessary for the story.
I do love that the one playthrough of the game I did, and it was Vivi that got the final blow, while the final party member I had left.
It just git with his character arc.
