This may sound very conspiracy theorist but I think since Daniel Bryan wouldn't be ready for MITB the WWE might have been playing up his injury as more critical then it was so they can pull a fast one in having him come back as a surprise for the PPV after the initial 6 months for the network.
Just an inkling in the back of my head that I kinda always had since they striped him of the title. Maybe its just wishful thinking (or hoping)

How bad was his neck? Like Kurt Angle in 2003 and was cleared after 6 months, or like Edge and Benoit who where sidelined for a year?

Doubtful. It's been reported that he's had issues with strength in his arm almost since the first surgery(when they expected him back in a couple of months)and that is a career threatening complication. Rumble at the earliest and maybe not even then.

I think the Rumble return is probable and would be amazing. I just want him to come back and stay healthy. I also just want him to get his strength back up and not rush back too soon.

I hope not, just for the fact that given all the reports, there's no way he'd truly be 100%. No reason to jump the gun. Get fully healthy before you come back.
Besides, our gargantuan, streak conqueror has returned to decimate; we're set for awhile as Brock the First annihilates all in his path.

See that's the thing I just have this suspicion that those reports about post surgery strength loss are planted stories. I just think the fact they bought it up on the MITB preshow interview is why. Just seems like we're being played a little too much as this is something that they could control what gets out there.

I can't wait for REY MYSTERIO to be the surprise 30th entrant in the Rumble next year!
Seriously I wouldn't be surprised if Bryan didn't even make the Rumble the way things are sounding.

Perfect scenario for a Bryan Rumble return:
Buzzer hits for #30 and we hear "who dat jumpin out the sky". Crowd prepares to boo as Rey comes out, only for "Rey" to pull off the mask and reveal Daniel Bryan to a MONSTER pop.
