Ray McDonald isn't a huge star, so the NFL will make an example out of him for sure.
The 9ers entire defense will be suspended by week 2 at this rate.

The sad truth of the NFL is that your star power carries precedence over what you do off the field, which is why so many NFL players think they are invincible and above the law.
They've been coddled since high school and given everything they've ever wanted, because no high school or college coaches or fans are going to stop an NFL prospect representing their hometown or school from developing into a star. Then when they get into the pros, they're given millions of dollars and essentially a green light to continue the lifestyle they've been leading for years. So that mentality leads to off-field trouble, because, again, nobody has ever told them "no" or "stop", and when somebody does, they can't comprehend that they'd be saying that to an NFL player.
That's why the "do you know who I am?" excuse is so frequently heard when a player gets in trouble with the law. Because that excuse has worked their whole lives, why wouldn't it work now?

He's familiar with the system, players and playbook. The same can be said for QB's who suck an go to a place and suddenly they're looking really good
Look at Mark Sanchez for one. He's spoken out about how much he HATED being with the Jets at the end. Now look at him with the Eagles, he's had a really good preseason, he looks like a different QB.
He has the benefit of having competent offensive coaching and a supporting cast in Philly, something he never had on the Jets except for his first season.

Texans traded for Ryan Mallett according to my ESPN app. Either a 6 or 7 rounder going back to NE.

Pretty neat we nabbed Mallett but I wish it happened sooner. It sucks to see Case end up getting cut because of it.

He is now free to sign with any team - specifically their practice squad

I thought that someone would pick Sam up.
Kind of surprised by the Grossman release though, he's Kyle Shanahan's number one guy.

Chiefs agreed to terms with QB Alex Smith on a four-year, $68 million extension through 2018.
Because Smith was owed $8 million in 2014, the deal is actually $76 million over five seasons -- a $15.2 million annual average -- with $45 million guaranteed. If you treat Andy Dalton's Bengals deal similarly, Smith is collecting roughly $1.3 million more per year, but is still well south of Jay Cutler ($18.1 million annually) and Joe Flacco ($20.1 million) money.
