Well there may eventually be 51 States if Puerto Rico does become one.

Having lived there before, New Jersey is almost two different states in certain things.
Also I did hear there was a plan to split up California into a bunch of states...

I guess a lot of people think mainland US is 50 and then count Hawaii and Alaska as 51 and 52. This.

It's 50 states.
Anyone in the United States even slightly confused about this is an absolute idiot, had negligent parenting, attended an awful school, and legally should not be allowed to vote or procreate.

I wouldn't be shocked if Illinois went the splitsville route some day. AS it is now the north and south are vastly different an Chicago thinks it is the state.

I don't know, we all know there's 46. {Spoiler}{Spoiler}Virginia, Massachusetts, Kentucky & Pennsylvania are all constitutionally recognized as "commonwealths".

I don't know, my 12 year old daughter knows what and where Guam is, and I don't remember them ever mentioning it when I was in school. The way they are teaching kids now has definitely evolved. There was talk recently about breaking up New York into two states, with Upstate NY and Manhattan being separate.

It never goes anywhere.

People confused that Puerto Rico is not a state and neither is washington dc. Well, Puerto Rico did apply for statehood a few years ago at last. They probably need it ever since the soccer bubble burst there. People don't understand that Washington D.C. is a territory that the government owns. In fact, if you live in D.C., you actually have fewer rights than if you live in any of the states because it took them nearly 200 years to get a delegate in the House of Represenatives (and they cannot vote).

It even has a greater population than the entire state of Wyoming and yet has no voting senators or representatives. Just three measly electoral college votes.

I'm really, really certain that anyone who would think that there are 52 states would never in a million years think to include places like Puerto Rico or Guam.
They're thinking of the "50" contiguous states plus Alaska and Hawaii, in their mind.

At the time of the area's creation, the founding fathers didn't expect the nation to expand beyond to the Mississippi River, and they also had to deal with the state of Franklin (this did exist). Basically, they felt that tne area would service as a central point in the country and that it wouldn't become a metropolis. Numerous efforts have been made to give D.C. citizens more sway in government, but it seems that the politicians that go there want the area to have no power or influence and be a figurehead location.
